CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The women's squash team was handed a 9-0 loss by Harvard on Friday evening in a quarterfinal match at the College Squash Association's Howe Cup. The eighth-seeded Big Red will next face Stanford in the consolation quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Harvard's Murr Center.
Cornell (10-7), which entered the championships ranked eighth in the nation to qualify for its 10th consecutive Howe Cup appearance, was also blanked by Harvard (13-0) in the teams' first meeting this season on Jan. 13. This was the 51st consecutive victory for the Crimson, which is the three-time defending national champion.
Junior
Lauren Leizman came closest to a rare point against Harvard, with three of the four games in her match at No. 9 requiring extra points. The Crimson rolled in three games in the other eight matches.
The loss sets up a match against a Cardinal squad that defeated the Big Red, 7-2, in the teams' regular-season meeting on Jan. 20 at a neutral site in Williamstown, Mass. Seniors Michele Garceau (No. 1) and
Margaux Losty (No. 3) had the Big Red's victories that day. Cornell is 11-8 against Stanford all-time, though the Cardinal has steadily moved up the CSA national rankings over the last few years.
All of the Howe Cup's matches on Saturday will be broadcast on subscription-based
Ivy League Network.
