#15 Men's Squash Edged by #14 Virginia, 5-4, In Hoehn Cup

HARTFORD, Conn. — The men's squash team got four three-love victories against a higher seed, but Virginia pulled out both of the day's five-game matches to record a 5-4 victory over the Big Red in a Hoehn Cup consolation semifinal on Saturday morning at Kellner Squash Center.

Cornell (6-14) entered the Hoehn Cup — which is the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship for teams ranked ninth through 16th in the country — ranked 15th, while Virginia (15-7) is seeded 14th. The Big Red now moves into the 15th-place match, where it will play at 8:30 a.m. Saturday against 16th-ranked Navy at 8:30 a.m. at Loomis Chaffee School in nearby Windsor.

Senior Jordan Brail (No. 3) got the Big Red on the board in the opening rotation, but the Cavaliers entered the second wave with a 2-1 lead. Cornell then pulled ahead with junior Perry Hanson (No. 2) and senior Ian Rothweiler (No. 5) both winning in three. It was the second win of the weekend for Hanson, who now leads the team with 10 victories.

Sophomore Jared Scherl competed in a marathon match at No. 8, but he came up on the wrong end of an interference ruling with the score tied at 8 in the fifth. His opponent never trailed from there, winning 12-10 to knot the score at 3.

At that point, Virginia had taken control of the match at No. 4. Junior Andy Muran fought back to win the fourth game in his match at No. 1, but the Cavaliers eventually won both to clinch the match. Freshman V. Luke Park II then provided the Big Red's fourth point at No. 7.

In Saturday's other Hoehn Cup matches, 12th-ranked Drexel edged 16th-ranked Navy, 5-4, to earn a date with Virginia in the 13th-place match on Sunday. In the main draw, ninth-ranked Yale topped 13th-ranked Brown, 8-1, and 10th-ranked George Washington blanked 11th-ranked Western Ontario, 9-0, in the semifinals.
