PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 23/RV women's lacrosse team battled hard against Ivy League rival Brown, but the Bears used a six-goal run in the final 17 minutes of the game to come back and top the Big Red, 14-13, on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. This marks the first time that Brown has topped Cornell since Apr. 16, 1999 when the Bears notched a 12-11 overtime win.
Despite the outcome, it was a big day for senior captain
Taylor Reed who not only scored a career-high four goals, but also crossed the 100-point threshold to tally 101 in her entire time at Cornell thus far. Reed also led the squad in draw controls with three.
Grace Paletta also had a big outing, notching career-highs in goals (3) and points (4).
Â
All in all, seven Big Red players got on the board with
Joey Coffy (2),
Tomasina Leska, senior captain
Ida Farinholt, Isabel Zachara and Caroline Allen contributing goals as well. Allen's score came from the free position, moving her up to No. 2 all-time in free positon goals in a single season (13) along with
Amie Dickson (2017).
After a back-and-forth first half that ended with both teams stuck in a 6-6 tie, thanks to a last-second goal by Coffy, each squad would go on runs to keep things tight. Cornell came out firing in the second, nabbing the first three goals in about three minutes' time, but Brown would get on the board twice more with under 23 minutes to play to cut Cornell's lead to just one (9-8).
Â
The team would take its biggest lead of the match following a quick four-score run (13-8) but then the Bears hit it into high gear and rattled off its six-straight to close out the game, taking the final lead with 2:18 left following the game winner from Caroline Zaffino.
Â
Hannah O'Reilly and Coffy had ground ball tallies of four and three, respectively, and Coffy and
Cait Callahan each caused two turnovers.
Â
Katie McGahan made six saves and had one ground ball pickup in all 60 minutes of action. Maggie Bigelow made three saves for the opposition in 41:23 of playing time while Mikaela Karlsson had five in 18:37.
Â
Brown's top scorer was Carolyn Paletta, Grace and
Natalie Paletta's sister, with four scores. Zaffino was dominant in draw controls with 10 to lead all players on the field.
Â
Cornell will return home to Schoellkopf Field for the final time in the regular season next Saturday for Senior Day. The team will square-off with Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
