BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cornell women's swimming and diving team scrimmaged Buffalo, Bowling Green, and Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 19 in what was a great pre-season test for the Big Red at the Alumni Arena Pool and Natatorium in Buffalo, N.Y.
Allison Chang and Sophia Cherkez got the 2019-20 season off to a hot start, recording Cornell all-time top-10 marks in the 100-yard IM. Chang finished fifth overall with a time of 1:00.47, a mark which ranks fourth in Big Red swimming and diving history. Cherkez posted the seventh-fastest 100 IM time in Cornell history, placing eighth in 1:01.01.
Cherkez had herself a day, also recording a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard IM (4:34.19) and anchoring Cornell's 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed fourth in 3:37.19. Claire Liu, Maegan Rudolph, and Melissa Parker swam the other three legs of the relay, helping the Big Red to a top-five finish.
Just a freshman, Parker swam a heavy load on Saturday and had success while doing so, placing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.76), sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (54.20), sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.23), and ninth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.29), in addition to swimming a leg on the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Lexi Schaaf swam well in the 50-yard butterfly, capturing a top-three finish and placing second with a time of 25.76.
In the diving events, freshman Elise Jendritz stole the show, placing fourth overall in the 1-meter competition with a point total of 261.40 and fifth in the 3-meter with 258.85 points. Demetra Williams also shined in the 3-meter competition, finishing one spot higher than Jendritz in fourth with 264.75 points.
The Cornell women's swimming and diving team will officially open the 2019-20 season on Nov. 9 when the team hosts St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. at Teagle Pool in Ithaca, N.Y.
