Siena, Marist Visit For Women's Tennis' Final Ivy League Prep

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team will compete in its final non-league matches of the season on Saturday, hosting a pair in-state foes at Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red takes on Siena at 10 a.m., followed by a clash with Marist at 3 p.m.

As it nears the Ivy League slate, Cornell (4-9) split a home doubleheader against Stony Brook and Niagara last Saturday. The Big Red rebounded from a 5-2 loss to the Seawolves in the morning with a 7-0 sweep of the Purple Eagles.

Freshmen Khary Pryce and Valerie Ho won two singles matches apiece. For Pryce, those victories – along with a No. 3 doubles win alongside senior Mariko Iinuma against Niagara – marked her first collegiate dual victories. Meanwhile, Ho upped her team-leading singles record to 7-6 even after making the jump to the No. 3 position for the first time.

Siena is 8-3, having won four of its last five matches. The Saints' first March match came in the form of a 6-1 victory over visiting Sacred Heart last Friday, Meagan Brown is 8-2 from primarily the No. 1 singles position, and she's 9-2 at No. 1 doubles alongside Natalie Weaver. Nanea Perkins is 7-3 while mostly competing at No. 3, and Juliana Goehner is 5-0 from the bottom two singles positions.

Marist, which opens the weekend with a Friday night match at Binghamton, has fallen to 4-7 after losses to Bucknell on Feb. 23 and Army West Point on March 1. Julia Gabay is 10-8 from the top two singles positions, tied for the team lead in victories with Sam Galu and her 10-7 from the next three positions down. They're also the team's top doubles pairing with a 6-4 mark at No. 1, though the Red Foxes have most of its doubles success at No. 3 – primarily from Claire Schmitz and Elizabeth Brozovich (9-5).

Cornell has never lost to either of this weekend's opponents. The Big Red defeated Siena, 6-1, in their only meeting on Feb. 7, 2009. Cornell is 3-0 against Marist, including 7-0 victories in 2015 and 2016.

Both matches are open to the public and free to attend.
