Rally Pushes #38 Harvard Past Men's Tennis, 4-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The men's tennis team suffered its first Ivy League loss of the season on Saturday afternoon when 38th-ranked Harvard won the final three singles matches to rally for a 4-3 victory over Cornell at Murr Center.

Harvard (18-5, 5-0) started off by winning the top and bottom matches in doubles to take an early 1-0 lead before Cornell (13-9, 4-1) stormed ahead in early singles play. Sophomore Evan Bynoe tied it up with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6, then sophomore Alafia Ayeni gave the Big Red the lead with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 1.

The remaining four singles matches all went to three sets. At No. 5, sophomore Eero Vasa fought back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to win a tiebreaker in the second. He then prevailed in the third, 7-5, to give Cornell a 3-1 lead. But from there, Harvard held on to win the remaining matches and stay undefeated in Ivy League play.

The loss ended a five-match winning streak for the Big Red, which is now in third place in the Ivy League standings. Cornell can remain in the hunt for its second Ivy League title in the last three years with a win over Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Sunday.
