ITHACA, N.Y. -- Defending Ivy League champion Harvard controlled the running game on both sides of the field to knock off Cornell 28-10 on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Crimson piled up 251 rushing yards and scored four times on the ground in improving to 3-1 (2-0 Ivy), while the Big Red was limited to just 62 yards in dropping its second straight contest.

The Crimson got 137 rushing yards and a touchdown from Gino Gordon, while Treavor Scales notched 92 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Junior quarterback Collier Winters chipped in with 29 rushing yards and a score, but completed just 9-of-25 passes for 104 yards against one of the Football Championship Subdivision's top passing defenses. Collin Zych had a team-high eight tackles and freshman Brian Owusu had his first two collegiate interceptions in the victory.

Senior Bryan Walters posted 132 all-purpose yards, including six catches for 50 yards, while sophomore Shane Savage scored his second career touchdown with a 17-yard reception in the third quarter. Horatio Blackman caught four passes for 39 yards and made a special teams tackle as well. Junior place-kicker Brad Greenway booted a career-long 47-yard field goal, the eighth-longest in Big Red football history. Defensively, Dempsey Quinn (12 tackles) and Aaron Levine (10 tackles) each reached double figures in hits, while Chris Costello (nine tackles, two TFL) and Ben Heller (nine tackles, interception) also had strong efforts. Brandon Lainhart posted eight tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.

Harvard held a decisive advantage in time of possession, wearing out a game Big Red defense by running 80 total plays and holding onto the ball for 36:11, including nearly 19 minutes in the second half. The Crimson scored on four of their five red zone chances and converted on 9-of-18 third-down conversions, while getting the Big Red off the field 11-of-15 times defensively. Of Harvard's 22 first downs, 18 of them came with the run.

A 21-yard kickoff return by Bryan Walters was wasted on the Big Red's opening drive and a 26-yard punt by Drew Alston put Harvard in business near midfield. The Crimson used a 10-play, 54-yard drive, capped by a five-yard touchdown rush from Treavor Scales, to get on the board. Patrick Long added the extra-point and Harvard took the early 7-0 lead at the 8:22 mark.

An interception by freshman Brian Owusu on Cornell's next drive set the Crimson up deep in Big Red territory, but a solid defensive effort stopped the drive and Long missed the 25-yard field goal attempt to keep the home team within a touchdown.

Facing an early 3-and-11 on its next offensive possession, Ganter connected with Walters for a 26-yard reception, and back-to-back rushes from Barbour netted 19 yards and pushed the Big Red into Harvard territory for the first time on the afternoon. From there, the Cornell offense stalled, but Brad Greenway came-on and set a new career-long (eighth in Cornell history) with a 47-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game with12:55 remaining in the second quarter.

Another defensive stop by Cornell thwarted the Harvard offense, but a brilliant punt by Jacob Domrowski pinned the Big Red on its own three-yard line.

After a series of three-and-outs by both teams, the Crimson strung together a nine-play drive that covered 58 yards and was capped by a nine-yard touchdown run by Gordon. Long connected on the PAT to make it a 14-3 game with just over three minutes to play before halftime.

With time running down in the half, the Big Red offense went to work and two big catches by Horatio Blackman, one for 12 yards and another for 20 yards put Cornell into Crimson territory with just over one minute to play. Another interception by Owusu ended the Big Red threat, but Harvard was unable to move offensively and took the 14-3 advantage into halftime.

The teams traded five straight possessions to start the third quarter, before Ben Heller picked off a Winters' pass and returned the ball 21 yards to the Harvard 47. The Big Red offense stalled and Cornell was forced to punt, but an illegal participation penalty gave the home team new life, setting up 1-and-10 on the Harvard 29-yard line. Three straight short-yard catches by Walters gave Cornell a first down and on the next play, Ganter connected with Shane Savage for the 17-yard touchdown reception. Greenway added the extra-point and the Big Red was back in the contest, trailing 14-10 with 1:46 to play in the third quarter.

The Crimson took the challenge, controlling the fourth quarter by holding the ball for more than 11 minutes and piling on an additional 108 rushing yards and moving the chains seven times in the quarter. A three-yard dive from Scales with 6:39 left to play made it 21-10, and after turning the ball over on downs, the Big Red defense allowed Winters to score a meaningless touchdown, as the junior found the end zone from 15 yards out with just nine ticks to play as the visitors marched off the field with the victory.

Cornell returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it meets Fordham in its final non-conference matchup of the year on Homecoming. The Big Red leads the all-time series 4-2 and has won four straight meetings between the teams.
