DeLAND, Fla.—The Big Red softball team went 1-2 on day one of the Stetson Invitational on Saturday. Cornell opened with a win over Hartford, 4-0, but fell to Iowa, 11-3, and Stetson, 2-0. The Big Red moves to 8-2 for the season.
Senior Meg Risica led the Big Red for the day going 5-for-7 to hit .714 at the place with two RBI. Junior Ashley Garvey went 4-for-8 with three RBI.
In the Big Red's game against Hartford, sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple picked up her fourth win of the season pitching for the Cornell. Dalrymple has not allowed a single earned run in her four starts, and she struck out eight Hartford batters. Ashley Garvey hit a two-run homer, while Alyson Intihar drove in another run with a sac fly.
Amanda Sais, Rachel Clonick and Ann Kyzer all picked up hits for Hartford. Brittney Stratton took the loss pitching five innings, while Siera Sheehan pitched for an inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Intihar was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an illegal pitch. The junior advanced to third when a Marissa Amiraian grounded out. With two outs, Garvey homered to right center field to drive in two runs.
Devon March walked to open the fourth, and Cassie Walisiak followed with a single on a bunt. Vanessa Leonhard advanced the runners with a sac bunt. Intihar drove in another run with a sac fly to center field.
In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Risica walked and stole second base. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored when Intihar reached first base on a fielding error by the Hawks short stop.
The Hawkeyes handed the Big Red its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, 11-3, in five innings. Iowa opened with hot bats to score five runs. Ashley Garvey and Meg Risica both went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Big Red. Sophomore Ali Tomlinson took the loss for the Big Red pitching four innings. Freshman Jenna Stoller faced six batters in the fifth inning.
The Big Red opened scoring in the first period. With one out, March reached first on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder and advanced to second. Garvey singled to center field to drive in March.
Iowa knocked in five runs in the first inning and followed with two in the third and one in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, March singled up the middle, and she advanced by a single from Garvey. With two outs, freshman Cassie Walisiak walked to load the bases. Risica singled down the leftfield line to drive in two runs.
Stoller came in pitch for the Big Red in the bottom of the fifth, and Iowa scored three runs to end the game.
Against Stetson, Risica went 2-for-3, while Intihar also had a hit. Freshman Lauren Marx only allowed two hits and struck out two batters.
Amanda Lindsey pitched for the Hatters. Lindsey struck out 10 batters and notched one of her team's hits.
The two teams were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Stetson drove in two runs.
With two outs in the sixth, Joyce singled and Migliori walked. Lindsey singled to center field and two runs scored.
The Big Red will be back in action on Sunday when it will play Iowa at 11 a.m. and Stetson at 4 p.m.
