Softball Picks Up Two More Wins at George Mason-Patriot Classic

FAIRFAX, Va.—The Big Red softball team finished the George Mason-Patriot Classic with a perfect 5-0 record this weekend to move to 7-0 overall for the season. Cornell defeated Niagara 12-0 in six innings to open play on Sunday and followed with a 9-0 victory over Central Connecticut State in a five inning contest.

Against the Purple Eagles, Alyson Intihar, Devon March and Elise Menaker all went 2-for-3 at the plate. Menaker had a double and home run to drive in four RBI. Senior Meg Risica also had a home run and three RBI. The Big Red totaled 10 hits for the game. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple picked up the win and had six strikeouts. Jenna Stoller also pitched for the Big Red with two strikeouts.

Maggie McDonald had the only hit for Niagara.

In the first inning, Intihar singled to left field and advanced to third on a fielding error. March singled to center field to drive her in.

In the top of the third, Cheever hit a single and Intihar followed with a hit up the middle. Menaker hit a double to center to drive in two runs. Menaker scored the Big Red's fourth run on a Niagara fielding error.

With two outs, March tripled to right center field in the top of the fifth inning. Menaker hit a homer to left field to drive in two more runs.

In the top of the sixth with two outs, Marissa Amiraian singled up the middle and Cheever walked. Risica hit a home run over the right center field fence to drive in three runs. Intihar and March were both hit by pitches to reach base. Cawley singled to center field and two runs scored on a fielding error. 

Against Central Connecticut State, senior Jessy Berkey went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI. Junior Vanessa Leonhard had two RBI. Ali Tomlinson earned the win with two strikeouts. Lauren Marx pitched one inning.

In the bottom of the first, with two outs and March on first base, Ashley Garvey and Erica Gaeta were hit by a pitch to load the bases. Leonhard singled up the middle to score two runs. With a home run to center field, Berkey drove in three more runs.

Garvey opened with a double down the left field line to start the third. Gaeta followed with a single, and a single by Berkey drove in another run. Shannon Crane singled to drive in another run, and Berkey scored on a wild pitch. With a single to left field, Intihar drove in the Big Red's ninth run.

The Big Red will begin is Florida Spring Break trip next week with games at the Stetson Invitational, Bethune Cookman and Rebel Spring Games.
