The Cornell women's soccer team takes to the road for the first time in 2010 when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y., for the 2010 Colgate Nike Invitational. The Big Red opens the tournament on Friday afternoon against in-state rival St. Bonaventure at 4:30 p.m. before closing out the tournament on Sunday, facing Seton Hall in a noon contest at Colgate's Van Doren Field.
HEAD COACH DANIELLE LAROCHE
Now in her fourth season directing the Big Red women's soccer program, Danielle LaRoche has assembled a team that is ready to compete among the Ivy League's elite programs. The fourth coach in Cornell history, she holds a career coaching mark of 8-38-2, but has the Big Red off to a 1-1 start this season. She picked up her first collegiate head coaching victory on Sept. 7, 2007, when Cornell defeated Hartford, 1-0, in double overtime. LaRoche's career also includes stops as an assistant coach at George Mason, Binghamton and Howard. A 1995 graduate of Maryland, LaRoche played two seasons for the Terrapins under April Heinrichs, who would later go on to serve as the head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team. LaRoche is assisted by Elke Reisdorph, in her second season, and Keith Comfort, in his first year with the Big Red.
ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell enters the weekend coming off its biggest win in nearly 18 years, scoring a 7-0 victory against Delaware State on Sunday to even the season record to 1-1. Cornell opened the year with a tough 2-1 loss to Delaware on Friday, with sophomore
Kristina Jackson scoring the lone goal in the defeat. On Sunday, both sophomore
Megan Crowell and freshman
Mary Keroack scored a pair of goals, while sophomore
Xandra Hompe tallied a goal and an assist on the day to lead Cornell to the victory against the Hornets. All three goalkeepers on the Cornell roster saw time over the weekend, with junior
Megan Bartlett working the Delaware game and taking the loss, allowing two goals on six shots, while fellow junior
Kelly Murphy and freshman
Tori Christ split time in the win against Delaware State, with Murphy making the only save of the contest. For the year, Cornell's goaltenders have a 1.00 goals-against average and a .714 save percentage with one team shutout.
ABOUT ST. BONAVENTURE
The Bonnies enter the weekend with a 2-3 overall record, book-ending three losses with a season-opening win against Bucknell on Aug. 21 and a 3-0 victory against Bowling Green on Sept. 5. In between, St. Bonaventure dropped contests at DePaul (1-0), at Purdue (4-1) and at Buffalo (3-2). The Bonnies are led offensively by Anna Cunningham, who has four goals and two assists in five games for 10 points. Courtney Bosse and Tori Burchett both have a pair of goals, while Courtney Hoenicke has a single goal on the year. In all, eight different players have found the scoring column this season. In goal, Kathryn Kerkman has seen the majority of time, posting a 1-1 record with a 1.81 goals-against average and a .733 save percentage. As a team, the Bonnies have a 2.50 goals-against average and a .600 save percentage.
THE SERIES WITH ST. BONAVENTURE
Cornell holds an 8-2-1 lead in the all-time series against St. Bonaventure, though the Bonnies have claimed the last two victories, including a 3-0 win on Sept. 12, 2008, in Ithaca. The two programs met every year from 2003 through 2008, with Cornell holding a slim 3-2-1 lead over that span. Cornell's last win over St. Bonaventure came as a 2-0 victory on Sept. 3, 2005, in Olean, N.Y.
ABOUT SETON HALL
The Pirates, who will play a mid-week game against 10th-ranked Maryland on Wednesday before making the trip to Central New York, enter the week with a 1-2 record, owning a victory against Fairleigh Dickinson on Aug. 29 and losses to Fordham (1-0) and Princeton (3-1). Seton Hall's offense has produced four goals through three games, with two of those goals belonging to Amy Ruhe, who leads the team with four points. Kaitlyn Ritter and Shannon Desmond both have a goal on the year for the Pirates. In goal, Jennifer Pettigrew has played all but one half, and has a 1.60 goals-against average and a .636 save percentage with a 1-2 record. As a team, the Pirates have a 1.33 goals-against average and a .636 save percentage.
THE SERIES WITH SETON HALL
Sunday's match will mark the first-ever meeting between Cornell and Seton Hall. The Pirates will be the eighth Big East team that the Big Red has faced in its history. Cornell holds a winning record against Pitt (1-0) and Providence (3-0-1) and has a losing mark against Connecticut (0-7), Rutgers (3-8), St. John's (0-2), Syracuse (0-7-1) and Villanova (1-2).
EIGHT IS ENOUGH
Just one weekend into the 2010 season, Cornell has already matched the scoring output from the 2009 season when the Big Red scored just eight goals in 15 games. Cornell scored once in a loss to Delaware to open the season on Sept. 3 and picked up seven more against Delaware State two days later.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Through just two games this season, six different players have scored a goal for the Big Red, surpassing the total of five players a year ago to put the ball in the back of the net. Of those six players, five have scored the first goal of their careers already this season.
LONG TIME COMING
Cornell's seven-goal outburst on Sept. 5 against Delaware State marked the first time the Big Red offense erupted for that total since defeating Army, 7-2, on Oct. 22, 1996, a span of nearly 14 years. The seven-goal margin of victory was the largest for Cornell since downing Bucknell, 7-0, on Oct. 18, 1992, a span of nearly 18 years. Additionally, the seven goals tie the Cornell record for most goals scored in a game, a mark previously set four times.
AIR FORCE
Junior
Sidra Bonner has four career goals to her credit, and each of the four have come the exact same way: a header off a corner kick. Bonner led the team in scoring last season with six points on three goals, and added another with a header off
Xandra Hompe's corner kick in the first half against Delaware State on Sept. 5.
ONE HERE, ONE THERE
While nine players have contributed at least one point on the season, only one player - freshman
Rachel Nichols - has tallied a point in both of the Big Red's two games. Nichols had an assist on
Kristina Jackson's goal in the opener against Delaware, then picked up two more assists in the win against Delaware State on Sept. 5. Nichols leads the team with three assists, while no other player has more than one.
IVY HONORS
Freshman
Mary Keroack was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week after her two-goal performance against Delaware State on Sept. 5.
YOUTH IS SERVED
Of the 28 players on the 2010 roster for the Big Red, just two of them -
Katie Hayes and
Lena Russomagno - are seniors, giving the Big Red an outstanding foundation for the future. In fact, of the nine players who have recorded at least one point through the first weekend of play, only
Sidra Bonner and
Brook Chang are juniors - all of the others are either freshmen or sophomores.
FOR STARTERS
Cornell has had great success in the 28 season openers in the program's history, picking up a 16-8-4 mark in the first game of the season despite the loss to Delaware to open the 2010 campaign. The Big Red is now 1-2-1 in season openers under Danielle LaRoche.
NATIONAL APPEAL
When Danielle LaRoche explains the recruiting efforts to bring together the 2010 team as searching far and wide, she's not kidding. The Big Red has 15 different states represented on the team roster, with California and Virginia having five apiece. New Jersey has three players wearing the Carnelian Red, while Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts each have a pair of players on the Cornell roster. States with a single representative include Hawaii, Maryland, Ohio, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Delaware, Connecticut and New York.
UP NEXT
Cornell is off for a week until it travels to Bucknell for a 3:00 p.m. contest against the Bison on Sun., Sept. 19, in Lewisburg, Pa., as the Big Red continues a string of six straight games away from Berman Field.
