ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 11 Cornell men's heavyweight rowing team will host its first home races of the season on Saturday morning when it welcomes both Princeton and Yale to the Cayuga Lake Inlet for the Carnegie Cup regatta. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m., with the varsity eight race slated for 9 a.m.
SETTING THE SCENE – Cornell is coming off a solid weekend, having won the Stagg Points Trophy against Syracuse and Navy. The Tigers and Bulldogs are both ranked fifth overall in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll with Yale coming off a victory over Penn and Columbia for the Blackwell Cup, while Princeton fell to Harvard in the Compton Cup.
THE CARNEGIE CUP – The Carnegie Cup, placed in competition among Cornell, Princeton and Yale in 1921 by Mrs. Andrew Carnegie, is awarded to the winner of the Varsity 8 race.
THE SERIES HISTORY – Since its inception in 1921, Princeton has won the Carnegie Cup 37 times, while Cornell has won it 29 times. Yale has taken the Cup just 19 times. The Big Red's last victory came during the 2009 season, with Yale wining in 2010 and Princeton taking the cup a year ago. No team has repeated as the winner since the Tigers won three straight from 2004 to 2006.
UP NEXT – The Big Red will have two weekends off to prepare for Eastern Sprints, held Sunday, May 13 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
