Tom D'Alessandro hit a three-run home run, then scored the go-ahead run in the 11th inning of the opener, then junior
Brenton Peters went 5-for-5 in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader sweep at Brown. The Big Red won the first game in dramatic fashion, 10-9, then ran away with a 12-5 victory in the second game before darkness forced a halt in play after eight innings.
Peters' five singles from the leadoff spot in the second game was the Big Red's first five-hit performance since now-senior
Marshall Yanzick accomplished the feat on April 25, 2011 against Penn. Two of Peters' base hits were on bunts in the third and fourth innings. The victories ended the Big Red's 11-game losing streak at Murray Stadium.
Cornell (19-6-1, 5-1 Ivy League) is tied atop the Gehrig Division standings with Princeton heading Sunday's doubleheader at Yale (6-20-1, 0-6). The first game is scheduled for a noon start.
Game 1 – Cornell 10, Brown 9 (11 inn.) – Box Score
In the fourth extra frame of the game, Cornell finally jumped on top after D'Alessandro led off the inning with a bunt single. Peters laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance D'Alessandro to second, then shortstop Yanzick's groundout to his opposite number pushed D'Alessandro to third. Freshman
JD Whetsel then delivered a single through the left side to plate the go-ahead run.
Brown (4-19, 2-3) didn't go down quietly. Matt DeRenzi led off the bottom of the 11th with a single to left, his fifth hit of the game, then pulled into second on an error. A sacrifice bunt moved DeRenzi to third and set up a dramatic game-ending double play. Mike DiBiase hit a grounder down the line that sophomore third baseman
Ben Swinford nabbed before it went foul. Swinford slapped a tag on DeRenzi, then threw across the diamond to force out DiBiase at first and end the game.

Kellen Urbon worked five innings of scoreless relief to even his record at 1-1. Freshman LHP
Eric Upton was the first out of the 'pen for the Big Red, working 3 1/3 innings and setting the final seven batters he faced down in order.
The Big Red stormed out to an early lead behind three unearned runs in the top of the first, with freshman
Kevin Tatum hitting a two-run single with two out. Swinford hit a two-run double in the third, but the Bears posted nine runs in the a three-inning span to get into the Cornell bullpen and take a 9-5 lead into the fifth.
Tatum and Swinford drew walks in the fifth, then scored on D'Alessandro's home run to left. Senior
Brian Billigen then scored the tying run in the seventh after a two-out single. Sophmore
Chris Cruz walked, pushing Billigen to second, then Billigen scored the tying run on an error by the Bears' shortstop.
Game 2 – Cornell 12, Brown 5 (8 inn.) – Box Score
Peters starred with five hits, but hitters six through nine in the order also had two hits apiece – including Tatum, senior catcher
Brandon Lee, Swinford and Whetsel. Freshman
Brian McAfee improved his record to 4-0 by working seven effective innings, yielding four runs on eight hits.
Brown (4-20, 2-4) took a 2-0 lead after two innings, but Cornell loaded the bases in the top of the third. Whetsel scored on a wild pitch, then Peters crossed home on a Billigen groundout to tie the score.
The Big Red plowed ahead for good with a five-run fourth. Tatum hit a one-out single, then back-to-back doubles by Lee and Swinford plated a pair of runs. A single by Whetsel drove in Swinford, then a bunt single moved Whetsel to second. A pair of wild pitches allowed Whetsel to score. For the second straight inning, Peters scored on a Billigen groundout, and Cornell enjoyed a 7-2.
The Bears got to within three runs before Cornell put the game away with four runs in the seventh. The Big Red had 16 hits in the game, its second-highest total in a game this season next to 20 against Delaware State on March 18.
