ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 13 Big Red heavyweight rowing team will have its final tune-up before IRAs as it welcomes No. 14 Penn to the Cayuga Lake Inlet in a battle for the Madeira Cup, as well as the James Wray Memorial Trophy, on Friday, May 25. Racing begins at 9:20 a.m., with the varsity 8 race slated for 10 a.m.
THE MADEIRA CUP: The Madeira Cup is awarded to the winner of the varsity race between Cornell and Penn, while the James Wray Memorial Trophy is awarded to the overall winner of the day's races. The Madeira Cup was donated in 1955 by the late Crawford Madeira, patron of Penn rowing, while the James Wray Memorial Trophy was donated in 1955 by members of the 1930 Cornell IRA varsity champions.
THE SERIES HISTORY: The series with Penn started in 1953. Since that time, Penn has won the Madeira Cup 36 times, while Cornell has taken the Cup home 20 times. The Big Red swept both the Madeira Cup and the James Wray Memorial Trophy in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
UP NEXT: The Big Red is back in action when it participates in IRAs, held May 31-June 2, on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
