CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The squash teams wrapped up the weekend with a pair of losses Sunday at Harvard. The Big Red men's team lost, 6-3, while the women's squad was defeated 9-0. It was just the third loss of the season for both Big Red squads, who each stand at 3-2 in Ivy League play.
The fifth-ranked Cornell men (12-3, 3-2) mustered one point in each rotation, starting with senior
Arjun Gupta's five-game victory at the No. 3 spot over Nigel Koh. Sophomore
Michael Sunderland won his second match of the weekend from the No. 5 spot, meaning the Big Red would have to sweep the final three matches to secure its third-ever victory over the Crimson.
Bryan Keating accounted for the visitors' third point with a four-game victory at No. 7, but that's as close as Cornell would get. Third-ranked Harvard won the final two matches to improve to 12-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Ivy League.
The sixth-ranked Cornell women (10-3, 3-2) couldn't get on the board against second-ranked Harvard (12-1, 4-1), which is the reigning national champion. Sophomore
Danielle Letourneau lost in three games to the nation's top-ranked player, Amanda Sobhy, at the No. 1 spot, but she had at least nine points in each game.
Jaime Laird (No. 3) and
Olivia Wherry (No. 9) were the only Big Red competitors to take a game off their opponents.
The Big Red returns home for a non-league regional matchup on Tuesday at Belkin International Squash Courts. The men's team will square off against Hobart, with the women's team taking on William Smith. Both matches are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
