LANCASTER, Pa. — The men's and women's squash teams wrapped up non-league play Saturday with a pair of victories at Franklin & Marshall. The men's team pulled out a 5-4 victory, while the women's team cruised to a 9-0 blanking of the host Diplomats at Mayser Center.
The men's team survived its first match since knocking off No. 1 Princeton on Friday, with the defending national champion Tigers entering that match undefeated. Seventh-ranked F&M (15-4) entered the match having won 11 in a row, and it took a 2-1 lead after the first rotation with victories at No. 6 and No. 9. Senior
Arjun Gupta got the Big Red on the board by rallying for a five-game victory at No. 3.
Fifth-ranked Cornell (15-3) came back to tie the match at 3 heading into the final three matches. Sophmore
Aditya Jagtap fought off a 16-14 loss in the first game of his match against Mauricio Sedano to win in four, and freshman
Graham Dietz outlasted Aadit Zaveri in five games, working overtime to secure a 15-13 victory in the decisive game.
F&M put Cornell on the brink of a loss with a win at No. 7, but senior co-captain
Nick Sachvie pulled the visitors even with a four-game victory over Guilherme de Melo at No. 1. That left the fate of the match rested squarely on the shoulders of sophomore
Michael Sunderland at No. 4. The recent transfer answered the call with a dramatic five-game victory, 13-11 in the fifth, to keep the Big Red poised to jump up in seeding for the national championships if it can defeat Penn in its regular-season finale Sunday. In all five of matches between the Big Red and Diplomats went to five games. It was Cornell's 18th straight victory over F&M, dating back to 1998.
The sixth-ranked women's team has tied a program record for victories in a season, improving to 12-4 and effectively rebounding from Friday's loss to top-ranked Princeton. All nine contests were decided in three games, with the Big Red yielding nine or fewer points in each of the 27 games against the 14th-ranked Diplomats (10-9). Cornell has defeated F&M nine straight times, dating back to 1998.
Both Big Red squash teams will be in Philadelphia on Sunday to take on Penn.
