POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Big Red fencing team opened its dual meet season in style, picking up eight victories this weekend at the Vassar Invitational. Cornell defeated CCNY, Fairleigh Dickinson, Haverford, Hunter, Sacred Heart, Stevens, Tufts and Vassar .
 
"We had a successful trip. Our well thought-out preseason trainings continue to pay dividends and we are looking for the future competitions to prove what we are capable of," said head coach Iryna Dolgikh. "This was the longest team competition, where we face eight schools all in one day, and this year we prevailed in all matches. We are very pleased with this great result, which took effort and all of the energy for the day of fencing."
 
The foil squad dominated the day, winning 65-of-72 bouts and going a perfect 9-0 vs. Haverford, Vassar, Sacred Heart and Tufts.  Angelica Gangemi was nearly perfect at 21-1 on the day, while Ediona Sera (21-2) and Luby Kiriakidi (20-4) were equally impressive, registering at least 20 wins.
 
The epee squad posted a record of 56-16 on the day, thanks in large part to Victoria Wines impressive 17-1 record.  Yolanda Li (17-6) and Olivia Weller (15-4) were the Big Red's other top finishers at epee.
 
The sabre squad rounded out the day with a 53-19 performance. Regina Chen led the squad with a 19-4 record, while Alaina Uhouse (16-7) and Sarah Gruman (14-7) both posted double-digit wins.
