THE WEEK AHEAD: The Big Red will play its final home games of the season and honor its seniors –
Katie Garrity,
Marisa Siergiej,
Taylor Standiford, and
Elizabeth Schaeffler – when it welcomes Brown and Lehigh to Marsha Dodson Field this weekend. The game with the Bears is slated for Saturday, Oct. 24 at 11:30 a.m., before taking on the Mountain Hawks the following day at 1 p.m. Cornell enters the weekend with a record of 8-5 overall after a tough 2-1 loss to No. 10 Albany on Tuesday evening. The Big Red has won its last two Ivy contests by shutting out Yale and Harvard to improve to 3-1 in the league, good for second overall in the conference standings. Brown has dropped two of its last three outings to slip to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in Ivy play, while the Mountain Hawks enter a Saturday afternoon contest at Colgate with a record of 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the Patriot League.
Â
SENIOR DAY SALUTE: This weekend will feature the final home games for seniors
Katie Garrity,
Elizabeth Schaeffler,
Marisa Siergiej and
Taylor Standiford. During their time on East Hill, Cornell's record has improved each year (8-9; 10-7; 11-5), including tying the school record with 11 wins overall and five Ivy League wins a season ago. To date, they have helped the Big Red to 37 wins overall, and three consecutive top-half finishes in Ivy League play.
Â
THE SERIES WITH BROWN: The Big Red had a six-game winning streak against the Bears snapped in the 2012 season when Brown won 4-3 in double overtime, but Cornell rebounded with wins in each of the past two outings to regain the 18-16-2 lead in the all-time series  ... Head coach
Donna Hornibrook is 8-3 vs. the Bears.
Â
SCOUTING THE BEARS: After winning two straight to open the month of October, Brown has dropped two of its last three outings to slip to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the Ivy League. All six of the Bears victories have been one-goal decisions, making the Bears 6-2 this season in contests decided by a single goal. Senior Hannah Rogers leads the team in goals (6) and points (15), with half of her goals coming in Brown's last two games (Holy Cross and Princeton). Senior Alexis Miller has also added five goals for the Bears, while Senior Emily Arciero has a team-high five assists. Freshman goalie Katie Hammaker has started all 14 contests and has posted a 2.50 goals-against average to go along with a .700 save percentage.
Â
LAST TIME VS. BROWN:Â Cornell juniorÂ
Marisa Siergiej continued her outstanding season with a pair of goals, including the game-winner just 1:52 in to the game, to lead the Big Red to a 3-0 victory over Brown on Oct. 25 at Goldberger Field in Providence, R.I.  Cornell held the 13-7 advantage in shots and a slim 6-5 edge in penalty corners as freshman goalieÂ
Kelly Johnson made three saves for her second solo shutout of the season.  Brown goalkeeper Shannon McSweeney, who entered the contest leading the Ivy League with a .761 save percentage, stopped just four of the Big Red's seven shots on goal. Siergiej scored once in each half to come within one goal of setting the school record for goals in a single season, and the Big Red earned a late insurance goal from
Katy Weeks, who capitalized off a Brown turnover to account for the 3-0 final.
Â
THE SERIES WITH LEHIGH: The series with Lehigh began in 1991, and Cornell is 21-1-1 all-time against the Mountain Hawks, with its lone loss coming during the 1993 campaign. The Big Red has won 19 straight in the series and head coachÂ
Donna Hornibrook is a perfect 10-0 vs. Lehigh.
Â
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS: Lehigh takes a record of 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the Patriot League into a Saturday afternoon contest at conference foe Colgate. While the Mountain Hawks have only won three games on the season – defeating Davidson, Siena, and Sacred Heart – the team has been very competitive, especially against its Patriot League opponents. Freshman Teresa Carotenuto leads the team in goals (9) and points (18), but has streaky with three multiple-goal games accounting for eight of her nine goals. Senior Lindsey Schott and junior All-Patriot honoree Gabby Tofig are the other main offensive threats with nine and seven points, respectively. In goal, three-year starter Julia Ward has played all but 35 minutes on the season and she enters the weekend with a 3.02 goals-against average and a .664 save percentage.
Â
LAST TIME VS. LEHIGH: The Big Red field controlled the game from start to finish, dominating Lehigh and coming away with a 6-0 victory on Sept. 12 at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pa. Â Cornell held the significant advantage in both shots (19-3) and penalty corners (8-0), as Cornell goaliesÂ
Kelly Johnson andÂ
Elizabeth Schaeffler combined for the shutout with neither being required to make a save. The Big Red was led byÂ
Marisa Siergiej andÂ
Elizabeth Horak with two goals apiece, whileÂ
Ann DiPastina registered one goal and two assists. FreshmanÂ
Katie Carlson rounded out the scoring for Cornell, while
Taylor Standiford (two),Â
Katy Weeks andÂ
Gabby DePetro all had assists.  Lehigh (0-5) starting goalie Julia Ward made four saves and allowed five goals in 58:14, before Katie Morris came in for the final 11:46 and made one save and allowed one goal.
Â
VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: The Big Red is 64-55-7 all-time vs. the current members of the Patriot League, thanks mostly to a 21-1-1 lead against Lehigh. The Big Red also holds a winning record against Colgate (21-19-3) and Holy Cross (7-5). Cornell holds a losing record against American (0-2), Boston University (0-1), Bucknell (10-15-1), and Lafayette (5-12-2) … Cornell is 26-13 vs. the Patriot League during Coach Hornibrook's tenure.

RANKED OPPONENTS: The Big Red's schedule features five teams that are ranked in the latest NFHCA Division I Poll – No. 1 Syracuse, No. 10 Albany, No. 15 Delaware, No. 18 Maine and No. 20 Princeton … A season ago, Cornell defeated No. 20 Maine on Oct. 26, 2014, giving the Big Red its first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 19 Syracuse, 3-2, on Oct. 25, 2007.
Â
ONE OF THE BEST: Head coach
Donna Hornibrook ranks among the best when it comes to winning. Among active Division I head coaches, she ranks 16th overall for winning percentage (.631) and 17th for career wins (217), rankings that would be higher if the NCAA counted her 60-8-6 record at Canada's New Brunswick.
Â
CLOSE CALLS: Cornell's 2-1 loss to No. 10 Albany on Oct. 20 continued the Big Red's trend of playing in one-goal games. Since the start of the 2006 season, the Big Red has lost 65 games, with 40 of those coming by a single goal, including 18 in overtime. During that same span, Cornell has won 85 games, with 42 coming in one-goal games, including 11 in overtime.
Â
EARLY LEADS: Scoring first has been a big part of the Big Red's success in recent years. Since Coach Hornibrook has taken over the program, Cornell has posted an impressive 90-14 record in games in which they have scored first. Conversely, the team has won only 14 games in which they have had to come back from an early deficit to win. The first was Coach Hornibrook's very first victory with the team, a 6-3 win over Lehigh in 2004, with the latest coming on Nov. 8, 2014 as Cornell overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Dartmouth, 4-1.
Â
KNOCK THREE TIMES: When the Big Red fell to Penn, 4-3, on Sept. 21, 2013 it marked only the fourth time in Coach Hornibrook's career with Cornell that the team scored three goals and lost the contest. Under Coach Hornibrook, the Big Red has won 67-of-71 in a game in which it scores at least three goals, a mark that was raised when it defeated Holy Cross (5-1) on Oct. 11, 2015.
Â
SHUTOUT STREAK: The Big Red had shutout four straight opponents – Sacred Heart (9/11), Monmouth (9/13), Vermont (9/19) and Maine (9/20) – matching the school record for consecutive shutouts, set twice before. The last time Cornell had four straight clean sheets came over the 1990 and 1991 seasons, as the Big Red defeated Dartmouth (1-0), Colgate (1-0) and Brown (1-0, OT) to close the 1990 season before opening the 1991 campaign with a 5-0 win over CW Post. Cornell has had four straight shutouts in the same season just once before, blanking Brockport (3-0), Lafayette (0-0, 2OT), Colgate (1-0) and Princeton (0-0, 2OT) in 1985.
Â
10 WINS: Cornell has won at least 10 games in seven of Coach Hornibrooks' 11 seasons. She is the only field hockey coach in Big Red history to lead the team to a single 10-win season.
Â
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Seniors
Taylor Standiford and
Marisa Siergiej have been named team captains for the 2015 season. Standiford also served as team captain a year ago.
Â
2014 SEASON RECORDS:
* A year ago, Cornell posted an 11-5 record overall, tying the school record for victories in a single season, previously set in 2008 and 2010.
* The squad set a school record for points (127), points per game (7.94), goals (45), and assists (37) in a single-season.
* Defensively, the team set a school record, allowing just 3.9 penalty corners per contest.
Â
TICKLE THE ALL-IVY: Following the 2014 season,
Marisa Siergiej was one of four unanimous first-team All-Ivy selections. In addition to Siergiej, freshman
Sam McILwrick and sophomore
Katy Weeks were named second-team All-Ivy, while both senior
Ann DiPastina and freshman
Krysten Mayers earned honorable mention.
Â
EVERYBODY'S (REGIONAL) ALL-AMERICAN: A year ago,
Marisa Siergiej become just the 12th player in Big Red history to be named first-team All-Mideast Region All-American.
Â
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Cornell earned the first national ranking in program history on Sept. 30, 2014 coming in at No 19 in the 2014 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. The Big Red fell out of the poll the following week after a 1-0 loss to American, but may have managed to hold onto its No. 19 ranking if it weren't for the fact that Indiana upset No. 4 Duke on the same day to jump into the rankings at No. 18.
Â
UP NEXT: The Big Red closes the regular season with a pair of road games over the next two weekend, travelling to Princeton on Saturday, Oct. 31 at noon, before facing Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 12 p.m.
