ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis emerges from a one-week hiatus this weekend with a two-match road trip, when it travels to take on Army at 10 a.m. Saturday and Maryland at noon Sunday.
Coming off its first victory over Yale since 1997, the women's tennis ascended into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings at the No. 72 position. The Big Red is one of the youngest squads in the Ivy League this year, with no seniors on the roster and just two juniors — captain
Dena Tanenbaum and transfer
Jane Stewart. Sophomore
Alexandra D'Ascenzo has a team-high three singles victories, and she has also teamed with classmate
Marika Cusick to record a team-best three doubles wins over the team's first six dual matches of the spring season.
Army heads into a Friday afternoon match at Fairleigh Dickinson with a 4-6 record, breaking a four-match losing streak with a 6-1 triumph over Vassar. The squad's other three victories came Jan. 30-31 at the West Point Invite against Binghamton, Sacred Heart and Seton Hall. The Big Red is 11-1 all-time against the Black Knights in a series that started in 1982. Cornell has won matches in each of the last two seasons by margins of 7-0 and 6-1.
The Big Red will then make its first-ever trip to College Park, Md. for a clash of nationally-ranked teams. Maryland is tabbed 67th by the ITA this week, sporting a 3-4 record heading into its Saturday home opener against No. 46 Harvard. The Terrapins defeated St. John's in their last match, with its other victories coming against Georgia State and Stephen F. Austin. Cornell and Maryland have only met once before, with the Big Red securing a 5-2 victory on May 3, 1996 in an NCAA Eastern Regional qualifying match at Syracuse.
