Wrestling Set For Post-Exam Tests In Sooner State

STORY LINES:
• With final exams complete, the Big Red wrestling team will test itself on the mat when it heads to the Sooner State for a pair of dual meets against national powers.
• Cornell returns from break against top-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. ET before squaring off with No. 17 Oklahoma on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. ET.
• Both matches will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Oklahoma, while Will LeBlond will be on the call locally on 1160 ESPN Ithaca.
• A number of Big Red wrestlers will be tested with matches against a pair of opponents ranked in the top 20 — Joey Galasso at 149, Taylor Simaz at 157, No. 20 Brandon Womack at 165, Ben Honis at 197 and Jeramy Sweany or Craig Scott at 285.
• Two-time NCAA champ Gabe Dean (184 pounds) will face yet another early season test when he meets the only wrestler that handed him a loss last season — No. 6 Nolan Boyd of Oklahoma State.
• Dean avenged his 14-9 dual meet loss with a dominant 10-4 decision in the NCAA quarterfinals.
• The senior, a leading candidate for the Hodge Trophy, has dominated all season long and has won 10 of his 13 matches this season by fall with four victories over wrestlers ranked in the top 13 — all bonus point wins.
• Dean became the sixth wrestler in meet history to win three Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational titles after earning a first period fall over 11th-ranked Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan in the semifinals and and a tech fall triumph over No. 8 Zack Zavatsky of Virginia Tech in the finals.
• 2015 NCAA finalist and two-time All-American Brian Realbuto continues to round into form and enters the weekend needing one win to become the 25th wrestler in Cornell history to reach 100 career victories.
• He'll get a chance to move up the polls when he squares off with Oklahoma State's Kyle Crutchmer (No. 4), who won a 4-3 decision over the Big Red senior last season at the Southern Scuffle.
• The Big Red has big goals — Cornell is eyeing yet another top five team effort and has a number of wrestlers with national championship and All-America aspirations.
• Dean and Realbuto headline an experienced and talented lineup that also includes 2016 All-American Dylan Palacio (157).
• NCAA qualifiers Dalton Macri (125), Palacio (157) and Owen Scott (197) have combined to wrestle just one total match so far this season, but all three are expected to be in the lineup this spring.
• In addition, two-time NCAA qualifier Mark Grey (133), 2016 NCAA qualifiers Joey Galasso (149) and Jeramy Sweany (285) join first-year starters Will Koll (141) and Brandon Womack (165) to punctuate the lineup.
• Noah Baughman (125), Taylor Simaz (157) and Ben Honis (197) have had great success early and will compete for the starting spot into championship season.
