SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior
C.J. Price was 2-for-3 with a home run, and junior starter
Tim Willittes worked into the seventh inning to help the baseball team win, 6-2, over Wofford on Sunday at Russell C. King Field. The victory gives Cornell (3-3) a series victory against a Terriers team which set a program record with 39 wins last season.
Juniors
Frankie Padulo and
Tommy Wagner also had two hits apiece from the top of the lineup, and the Big Red never trailed for against Wofford (11-6) for a second straight game. Junior
Peter Lannoo worked the final 1 2/3 innings before the game was called due to rain, earning his first save of the young season.
Padulo led off the game by reaching on an error, then advanced to third on a single by Wagner. Junior
Cole Rutherford then drove in Padulo for the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to right.
Cornell then took advantage of more Wofford defensive miscues to plate three more runs with two out in the fourth. Making his collegiate debut, freshman
Josh Arndt hit a one-out double. Sophomore
Trey Baur was hit by a pitch, then Padulo hit a two-out single to right to score Arndt. Baur took the extra base to reach third, and Padulo moved up to second on the throw. Both Padulo and Baur then scored when Wagner put the ball in play and reached on an error.
Wofford finally got to Willittes with a solo homer in the fourth, but the Big Red starter artfully dodged more damage by stranding a total of five runners in scoring position in the second, third and fifth innings alone.
The Big Red pushed its lead to 6-1 in the sixth after the first Cornell home run for Price, who joined the Big Red this season after two years in the Division III ranks with Washington University in St. Louis. Padulo then doubled and scored on Wagner's base hit to left.
The Terriers pushed across another run in the seventh, but Lannoo averted more damage by getting a strikeout and flyout with the bases loaded to end the threat.
Cornell returns to action next weekend with its first four-game series of the year. The Big Red plays twin doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Bucknell.
