LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Dale Wickham was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, and junior
Peter Lannoo worked into the seventh inning to win his first collegiate start as the baseball team staved off Bucknell for a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Depew Field. The Big Red won three of four games in the weekend series to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Cornell provided Lannoo with a one-run lead in the second when Wickham led off with a single and advanced to third on sophomore
Ellis Bitar's base hit down the line in right. Junior
C.J. Price then drove in Wickham with a groundout to the right side.
Bucknell (7-12) mustered just two hits in Lannoo's first six innings of work, with the Big Red's 6-foot-5 righty retiring eight in a row at one point and 10 straight a little later.
Wickham's second homer of the season came in the sixth after senior
Jordan Winawer led off the inning with a walk, giving the Big Red a three-run lead.
The Bison finally broke through for a couple runs in the seventh and had the potential tying run on base in the seventh. Senior
Ryne Veenema came on in relief and recorded a strikeout to end the threat and keep Lannoo in line for the win.
Junior
Jamie Flynn was the next reliever up, fanning the first two batters he faced in the eighth. Bitar, making the start at catcher, ended the inning by gunning down a stolen base attempt at second base.
Bucknell threatened again in the ninth when an error allowed a runner to reach. Another base hit and a stolen base pushed the potential tying run on third and the winning run on second. A grounder to second base provided the second out while forcing the runners to hold. Sophomore lefty
Justin Lewis then earned his second save of the season by getting a groundout from a pinch hitter.
Cornell returns to action next weekend with a return trip to the Sunshine State. The Big Red will play five games in six days, comprised of a three-game set March 25-27 at Central Florida and two more games March 29-30 at Rollins.
