ITHACA, N.Y. — The golf team turned in tournament-best round of 1-over-par 285 on Sunday to win the Cornell Invitational, giving the Big Red its first full-field tournament victory since the 2007-08 season. Senior
Luke Graboyes shot a 2-under 69 in the final round at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course to finish second in the individual portion of the competition with a three-round score of level-par 213.
With the course dealing with a power outage in the morning after about an inch and a half overnight, Sunday's final round was shifted to a shotgun start. In addition to the course's softening, much calmer winds improved scoring conditions further on the 6,904-yard, par-71 track. With a scoring average of 75.30 on Sunday, the course played nearly three shots easier than Saturday's blustery first round.
Graboyes turned in Cornell's lone sub-70 round of the tournament on Sunday, and he did so in somewhat unusual fashion. Three of his four birdies came on of the tournament's four toughest par 4s — Nos. 3, 4 and 18. After bogeys on the 12th and 15th brought him back to even on the day, Graboyes finished strong with a birdie on the par-5 16th and another on the last.
While Graboyes' presence in medalist contention certainly helped Cornell's effort, the team title was secured with unmatched depth in the final round. The Big Red's other counting scores were 73 or better. Junior
Christopher Troy shot an incredibly steady 71 on Sunday. He birdied the par-4 eighth hole and had just one bogey on the 12th. The tournament's leader with 40 pars over three rounds, Troy finished in a tie for 12th — his best collegiate finish in a full-field tournament.
Freshman
Mike May shook off a tough Saturday with a solid 72 in the final round with birdies on two of the course's four par 3s. Sophomore
(Jack) Tianyi Cen turned in a 73 with birdies on the seventh and 16th holes. He finished tied for 26th overall.
Cornell's tournament win was its first in a full-field event since the 2007-08 season, when it captured both Delaware's Scotty Duncan Memorial and Big 5 Invitational titles. The Big Red's team total of 27-over-par 879 was four strokes clear of a second-place Colgate squad that was powered by an impressive medalist effort from freshman Ryan Skae, who was 6-under over the three rounds. Yale and 36-hole leader Siena (885) were tied for third, and Columbia (890) rounded out the top five.
Cornell also fielded a 'B' team in the tournament, which finished 13th in the field of 14. Freshman
Jack Casler and junior
Jeremy Paton both posted 73s on Sunday. Casler was the 'B' team's best individual finisher, coming in a tie for 44th.
The Big Red returns to action next week with The Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge, which is hosted by Dartmouth.
