HAMILTON, N.Y. – After seeing three sets go to extra points (28-26, 14-25, 28-26, 26-28), the Big Red volleyball team left little doubt in the decisive fifth set, storming out to a 10-2 lead and rolling to the 15-9 victory to defeat La Salle, 3-2, this evening in the opening round of the Colgate Invitational. Play continues tomorrow with Cornell facing Stony Brook at 2 p.m., before taking on the host Raiders at 6 p.m.
Kit McCarty led an impressive Cornell offense that saw three players register double-digit kills on the evening. McCarty finished with a career-high 20 kills and just four errors on 43 attempts for a .372 hitting percentage.
Emily Wemhoff chipped in 15 kills, while
Kara Rogers tallied 11 kills and just two errors for a .391 hitting percentage.
In front of the defense,
Jada Stackhouse and McCarty registered seven and six block assists, respectively, while
Jenna Phelps tallied one solo block and four block assists. Phelps also registered a team-high four service aces.
Kiley McPeek, who entered the weekend ranked 13th in the nation in digs per set, had another solid outing with a match-high 25 digs, while
Samanta Arenas (16) and
Lily Barber (11) both finished in double digits.
Chelsea Sincox registered a career-high 28 assists, while freshman
Zoe Chamness saw her first sustained action of the season and posted 15 helpers.
La Salle (9-5) also had three players with double-digit kills, led by Samantha Graver's 17 kills.
