MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Senior
Margaux Losty swept all four of her matches this weekend, helping the women's squash team defeat George Washington, Franklin & Marshall and Middlebury among a busy four-match weekend.
Cornell (8-3), which figures to remain eighth in the College Squash Association national rankings after essentially holding serve with its three victories in addition to Saturday's loss to fourth-ranked Stanford, started off the weekend with its 10th straight victory over No. 12 George Washington on Friday in Williamstown, Mass. The Big Red swept the first two rotations before riding out a 7-2 victory. Four of the opening six victories came in the minimum three games, then senior
Charlotte Knaggs rallied after dropping the first game at No. 7 to win and four and cap the scoring for the Big Red.
Saturday featured a rare doubleheader, but with both matches in different states. Starting the day with a neutral-site match against the Cardinal at Williams, Cornell was handed a 7-2 loss. Both of the Big Red's All-Americans from 2017 accounted for the squad's points. Losty's win in three at No. 3 had Cornell trailing just 2-1 early, but Stanford swept the middle rotation to clinch. Senior Michele Garceau then won in four at No. 1 for Cornell's second point.
After making the short trek north to Middlebury in the early afternoon, Cornell cruised to a 9-0 sweep of 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall in the evening. None of the matches reached a fourth game, with junior
Lauren Leizman conceding just seven points in her sweep at No. 9.
The Big Red remains eighth in the new College Squash Association rankings after winning two of three matches last weekend at Belkin International Squash Courts. After falling to three-time defending national champion Harvard on Saturday, Cornell rebounded with a 7-2 triumph over Dartmouth and a 9-0 sweep of William Smith on Sunday.
Cornell rolled again in the trip's finale Sunday afternoon, posting another 9-0 victory against 15th-ranked Middlebury. Six of the eight contested matches were decided in three. With a slight tweak to the lineup, junior
Hannah Scherl moved into a scoring position at No. 9 and won in four.
The Big Red is idle through next weeknd before a rare Wednesday matinee on Jan. 31 at Drexel.
