Men's Squash Upsets Navy, 6-3, To Earn Wednesday Split

PHILADELPHIA — In a big day to jockey for position in the approaching season-ending Hoehn Cup, the men's squash team upset Navy, 6-3, to earn a split of its two matches Wednesday at Kline & Specter Squash Center. The Big Red started the day with a 9-0 loss to host Drexel, but it rebounded to defeat a higher-ranked team for the first time this year.

Cornell (6-7) entered the day tabbed 15th in the Dunlop College Squash Rankings. After losing to 12th-ranked host Drexel (6-8), the Big Red put itself in position to move up a peg or two in the rankings by topping 13th-ranked Navy (14-8). There are just two weeks remaining in the regular season before the College Squash Association flights off its rankings to run the national championships, including the Hoehn Cup for seeds nine through 16.

Against the Mids, Kenan Ong played one of his strongest matches recently to join Jordan Brail in posting an opening-rotation victory in the minimum three games. Ian Rothweiler fought back to win in four at No. 5, but Navy was able to knot the match at 3 entering the final rotation. By that point, Andy Muran was on his way to a three-game win at No. 1, and Jared Scherl clinched the contest in three at No. 7. For good measure, Illia Presman staved off his opponent at No. 4 to win the clash's lone five-game affair.

Cornell returns to Ivy League play this weekend, traveling to Brown for a match on Saturday before shifting west to take on Yale on Sunday.
