ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The men's tennis team started a road trip to Big 10 country with a 4-1 loss to Michigan on Friday evening at Varsity Tennis Center. Junior
Daniel Soyfer won for the second time in Cornell colors with a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles to account for the Big Red's lone point.
Michigan (2-2), tabbed 24th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings this week, started off by securing the doubles point with wins at the top two positions – though the Big Red's third pairing of
Lev Kazakov and
Joseph McAllister was 5-all in its match when play was halted.
Soyfer, a transfer from Wisconsin, then took control of his singles match while the Wolverines started to pull away in the others by winning five of the six respective first sets.
Cornell started to gain some traction in the second sets, with Kazakov forcing a third set in his No. 2 singles and Soyfer wrapping up his match. Senior
Jake Hansen was at 5-all in the second set at No. 6, but Michigan pulled away with wins at Nos. 3 and 4 to clinch.
The Big Red wraps up its weekend trip to the Great Lakes State with a visit to Michigan State for a non-league match at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The match will be streamed through Playsight, and
live stats will be available through the Michigan State website.
