PHILADELPHIA – Junior
Daniel Soyfer teamed with senior
Jake Hansen to secure the doubles point at the No. 2 position, then won in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles to clinch the men's tennis team's 4-2 victory over Brown on Sunday morning in the fifth-place match of the ECAC Indoor Championships at Hecht Tennis Center.
Sophomores
Alafia Ayeni and
Eero Vasa started off with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, then the Hansen/Soyfer tandem rattled off victories in the last four games at No. 2 to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.
The teams split the opening sets of the six singles matches before junior
Pietro Rimondini became the first to close out a match at No. 5. Kazkaov was close behind at No. 2 to push the Big Red's lead to 3-0, but
Joseph McAllister's rally in the second set at No. 6 came up short to get Brown on the board.
Sophomore
Evan Bynoe forced a third set in his match at No. 4 before his opponent pulled ahead for good. Ayeni also won the second set at No. 1, then was up a break in the third when Soyfer clinched the match in the tiebreaker in the second set at No. 3.
Cornell (3-5) returns to Ithaca to host dual matches for the first time this season, hosting Iowa at 11 a.m. Saturday before taking on Colgate at 3 p.m. to complete the doubleheader at Reis Tennis Center.
