ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 victory over visiting Brown on Saturday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center in its first Ivy League match of the season.
Senior
David Volfson won his fifth straight singles match for Cornell (9-8, 1-0 Ivy League), moving up to the No. 3 position this week. He was also reunited with junior
Daniel Soyfer at No. 1 doubles. Ranked 40th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the tandem competed together for the first time since fall tournament play and emerged with a victory in a tiebreaker at No. 1 to clinch the opener point.
Singles proved less dramatic, with the Big Red rolling to straight-set victories in four of the six clashes against Brown (8-8, 1-1).
Sophomore
Evan Bynoe had the easiest singles match of the day for Cornell, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. Soyfer and Ayeni joined Volfson in straight-set victories, with Ayeni using a first tiebreaker to take control. Junior
Lev Kazakov needed a super tiebreaker to lock up his win at No. 2, and sophomore
Eero Vasa staved off his opponent in three sets at No. 5.
The Big Red wraps up the weekend with a pair of home matches on Sunday. Cornell hosts Yale in an Ivy League match at 1 p.m., then a non-league affair against Niagara will follow.
