PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the fourth-straight year, the Cornell women's swimming and diving team opened the Ivy League Championships with a school record mark in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Laurel Kiselis, Melissa Parker, Alexandra Handlin, and Sophia Cherkez touched the wall with the fastest time in Big Red history on Wednesday night.
The quartet's school record mark of 7:20.96 was roughly two and a half seconds faster than the previous record of 7:23.42 that was set at last year's Ivy Championships by Cherkez, Maddy Redding, Maegan Rudolph, and Kiselis. The Big Red hasn't been content in the event from year-to-year, re-setting the school record at every Ivy League Championship since 2017.
Cornell also competed in the 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday night, cracking the Big Red's top-10 list in the event. The team of Isabel Chien, Cape Murch Elliot, Lexi Schaaf, and Parker finished the race in a season-best 1:43.03, a mark which ranks 10th all-time in Big Red history.
After placing seventh in the 800-yard freestyle relay and eighth in the 200-yard medley relay, Cornell sits in eighth place after day one with 90 points. The Big Red is just 10-points back of fourth-place Columbia (100), eight points back of fifth-place Dartmouth, and six points back of Brown (96) and Penn (96), who are tied for sixth. Harvard leads after the first day of competition with 128 points.
The Big Red women's swimming and diving team will return to Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, R.I. tomorrow for day two of the Ivy League Championships. Prelims are set for an 11 a.m. start, while finals will commence at 6 p.m.
For fans who can't be in attendance, both prelims and finals will be available on ESPN+. Live results are also available.
