Heavyweight Rowing Sweeps Competition in Return

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's heavyweight rowing program defeated Hobart and Marist in each of its three races on Saturday, May 8, going undefeated in its return to the water. It was the first time the heavies have competed since the fall of 2019 and marks Cornell's return to varsity athletics action.
 
"Excitement wise it was absolutely tremendous, it was a lot of fun to compete and the guys were really excited," said Todd Kennett, the Spirit of '57 Director of Rowing and Head Coach of Heavyweight Rowing. "We prepared as well as I think we possibly could have under the circumstances and the guys went out and executed pretty well."
 
Cornell's varsity eight, which consisted of Jack Robinson (coxswain), Iain Kazmierczak, Adam Campain, Bret Bay, Max Kreutzelman, Evan Wilt, Jackson Stone, Ethan Waxman, and Carl Pracey, took first place with a time of 5:49.60. The Big Red finished 2.5 seconds ahead of Hobart (5:52.10) and 7.5 seconds ahead of Marist (5:57.10).
 
In the second varsity eight Cornell crossed the finish line in 6:12.10, which bested the time of second-place Marist (6:16.40) by 4.3 seconds and third-place Hobart (6:25.40) by 13.3 seconds. Cornell's second varsity eight was crewed by Max Zirkman (coxswain), Kyle Fowler, Jackson Fellows, Ben Aquilina-Piscitello, George Resley, Thomas Figura, Alex Bloom, Joe Welling, and Grant Stephanz.
 
The Big Red came away victorious in their third race of the day as the third varsity eight finished with a time of 6:23.50. Competing with the third varsity eight was James Kelso (coxswain), Ross Moseley, Nick Potter, Greg Nelson, Isaac Murphy, Brett Bosse, Alex Zadeh, Chris Lawson, and Josh Louser. Cornell's 3V8 finished three seconds ahead of Marist (6:26.50) and 32.5 seconds ahead of Hobart (6:56.00).
 
"Thank you to all of the people that made this possible in such a short period of time," said Kennett. "It was truly amazing seeing the guys faces afterwards. Not only because they won, but because they had the opportunity to go out there, be in uniform, have the jitters, and compete."
