WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Cornell football team jumped on Georgetown early and put the Hoyas down for the count, running away for a dominant 45-7 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium, ruining GU's homecoming celebration. With the victory, Cornell improved to 2-1, while Georgetown slipped to 0-5.
Senior Luke Siwula moved into fifth place on the school's all-time rushing list, piling up 93 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters, while junior quarterback Nathan Ford went 23-of-32 passing for 201 yards and an 11-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Nick Zerante. In all, Ford and backup Ben Ganter found 12 different receivers with no one catching more than four passes. Sophomore Randy Barbour added his first career touchdown run in the triumph, while Stephen Liuzza added a running score in the victory.
The Big Red piled up the numbers in reversing the karma from last weekend's 51-12 loss at Yale, handing the Hoyas their first loss on homecoming in eight years. Cornell had more than 200 yards both running (252) and passing (206), ending the afternoon with 458 total yards. The squad also piled up 26 first downs and had a dominant effort on defense, limiting the Hoyas to 115 rushing yards on 39 attempts. The Big Red had five sacks and eight total tackles for loss, with both Ryan Blessing and Luke McCarthy posting 10 tackles in the win, with McCarthy adding a forced fumble. Linebacker Chris Costello had five tackles and blocked a punt
Liuzza had 74 yards and a touchdown on the ground and 32 yards on four catches, while Siwula added 26 yards on three carries to his totals. Senior Peter Zell made all six extra-points and made 1-of-2 field goals, narrowly missing a career-long 48-yarder and hitting comfortably on a 40-yarder.

Quarterback Matt Baussuener was 12-of-23 passing for 173 yards, finding his favorite receiver Kyle Van Fleet five times for 84 yards. The quarterback also ran for GU's lone score. Nick Parrish had 12 tackles and Kevin Cherepski had an interception.
Georgetown moved the ball into the red zone on its first possession, but the Big Red defense stiffened and consecutive sacks on third and fourth down. On the first play from scrimmage, Liuzza went under center and kept the ball, evading four tacklers en route to a 42-yard run to the Georgetown 19. After bringing the ball to the 7 on a Ford rush, Siwula went for three hard yards. Two plays later, Siwula went 1 yard on a gutsy fourth down call for his 20th career touchdown. Zell's conversion kick made it 7-0 with 6:03 remaining.
\Georgetown went three-and-out on its second possession and after the Big Red offense stalled, Zell had plenty of leg on a 48-yard field goal, but the kick sailed just wide left to give the Hoyas the ball back.
After Cornell forced another punt, Chris Costello broke through the line on fourth down and blocked his first career punt, which was picked up by Isaac Minor and returned to the Georgetown 18. Ford's second down toss intended for Blackman was intercepted, as Cherepski stepped in front of the play at the 2. The Hoyas got out of the shadow of its own end zone, but the Big Red again put a hold on the opposing offense, forcing one of seven Hoya punts on the day.
After a nice punt return by Walters to the 43, two carries by Siwula and a catch by Spooner helped the Big Red cross midfield. A pass underneath to Siwula went to the 13 on a second-and-3, then a short run by Siwula brought it down to the 11. On third down, Ford threw a deep fade to Nick Zerante. The sophomore made an acrobatic catch in the left corner, barely getting a foot down to put Cornell up 14-0 with 7:18 left after the conversion kick. It was Zerante's first career touchdown, while it was Ford's first passing score of the year.
After trading punts, Georgetown carried the ball back into the Cornell end, getting the ball down to the 34 before a tackle for loss by Rihn put it back at the 36 and set up a third and long. Robert Lane's third down pass fell short, bringing up a fourth-and-8 from the 36 with 1:43 left. The Hoyas decided to go for it in front of their homecoming crowd, but the snap was poor and after Basseuner picked it up, he tossed it up for grabs and the pass fell to the ground.
With its full complement of timeouts, the Big Red quickly moved the ball to midfield on a run by Siwula, and a personal foul by the defense moved the ball all the way to the 35 with 1:09 left. A toss to Baker brought it to the 26, followed by a run by Siwula down to the 17, but a flag for holding pushed the Big Red back to the 34. The dance continued, with Ford hitting Canty at the 13 for a new set of downs. With only 11 seconds to play, Siwula took a hand-off and went the remaining yards to cross the goal line with 5.5 seconds to play. The kick made it 21-0 as both teams went into the locker room.
Cornell added 10 points in the third quarter, getting another 11-yard scoring run by Siwula on third-and-long, then watching as Zell connected on a 40-yard field goal to go up 31-0.
Georgetown finally got on the board with 1:44 left in the third quarter when Basseuner scored on a 5-yard rush two plays after the quarterback found Kyle Van Fleet for a 53-yard gainer.
The Big Red answered the score with one of its own, as Randy Barbour followed Quentin Bernhard for an 8-yard score for his first collegiate touchdown. The sophomore had thrown for a touchdown last week at Yale. The kick made it 38-7 with 13:00 to play.
After holding on Georgetown's next possession, Ben Ganter took over for Ford, finding Matt Kenney for a 6-yard grab. A Liuzza fourth down run kept the drive going, as he converted with a 7-yard effort. Five plays later, the sophomore got behind a solid block by Bernhard and ran untouched 14 yards to the end zone to cap the scoring with 2:44 left.
The Big Red returns home for the first of three consecutive home contests when it meets Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
