ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red softball team opened its Ivy season on Saturday afternoon by sweeping Brown with an 11-0 win in game one and followed with a 6-0 shutout in game two. Cornell totaled three home runs for the day, including a grand slam by junior Devon March in game one in the first inning. The Big Red is 2-0 against the Ancient Eight and is 21-5 overall for the season.
Junior Alyson Intihar was 5-for-7 for the day with four runs and a lead off triple to start game one. Classmate Ashley Garvey was also 5-for-7 with two doubles and a home run for four RBI. Senior Jessy Berkey and March were both 3-for-6. Junior Elise Menaker notched Cornell's third homer in game two.
Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple earned the first win, allowing only one run while striking out five batters. Freshman Lauren Marx earned the save. In game two, Ali Tomlinson grabbed the victory allowing three hits and notched four strikeouts. Marx pitched the last inning for Cornell.
For the Bears, Emily Chaddock went 4-for-5, while Jackie Giovanniello and Sandra Mastrangelo each picked up a hit. Trish Melvin took the loss in game one, while Jessica Iwasaki had the decision in game two.
Dalrymple shut down the Bears quickly to open the first inning, and Cornell came out hot in its first at bat. Intihar opened with a triple to center field, and March drove her in with a single. Menaker followed with a single up the middle, and Garvey hit in three more runs with a home run to center. Freshman Erica Gaeta singled to center and advanced to third off a double by Berkey. Iwasaki came in to pitch for the Bears after the hit. Meg Risica kept the Big Red's streak going with a double to center to score Gaeta, and Risica scored by a double off of the bat of Vanessa Leonhard. Marissa Amiraian and Intihar singled to load the bases before March hit a grand slam to give Cornell an 11-0 lead that it would hold until the end of the game.
In game two, Cornell scored six runs off 13 hits. Intihar opened with a single to right field. With two outs, Cornell took a 1-0 lead with a double by Garvey to
center.
In the bottom of the second, Tomlinson opened with a double to center, and freshman Katie Watts pinch ran. Risica drove her in with a double of her own.
Garvey singled to open the bottom of the fifth, and Berkey followed with a single of her own. The runners advanced to second and third on the throw. Cassie Walisiak bunted to drive in Garvey, and Berkey tried to score as well but was thrown out at home. Leonhard reached on an error by the third baseman, allowing Risica to score another run for Cornell.
In the bottom of the sixth, Intihar singled up the middle and advanced to second off a sac bunt by March. Intihar advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Cornell took its final 6-0 lead with a home run by Menaker.
The Big Red will play host to Yale for a double header on Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
