Box Score
ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior catcher
Brandon Lee was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, classmate
Frank Hager hit his second home run in as many games, and senior starting pitcher
Rick Marks worked into the eighth inning of Monday's 5-2 victory over Dartmouth at Hoy Field.
The Big Red trailed the four-time defending Ivy League Rolfe Division champions by two runs early, but rallied to score the game's final five runs and complete a two-game sweep that started with Sunday's 2-0 victory — highlighted by a no-hitter from sophomore
Connor Kaufmann.
With the victory, Cornell is 16-5-1 and 3-1 in the Ivy League. It's the Big Red's best league start under
Bill Walkenbach, the fourth-year Ted Thoren Head Coach of Baseball, and only the second time since 1994 that Cornell has won at least three of its first four Ivy tilts.
Trailing by two, Cornell threatened in the bottom of the fourth. Lee doubled to deep left with one out, then sophomore
Ben Swinford worked out a walk after a long at-bat to put runners on first and second. After the Big Green induced a popout for the inning's second out, sophomore
Ryan Plantier hit a grounder to third. The Dartmouth third baseman fielded the ball cleanly and opted to try for the forceout at second, but Swinford beat the throw and Cornell had the bases loaded. Freshman
JD Whetsel then hit a ball that looked like it would drop in for a hit, but Dartmouth left fielder Jeff Keller made a sliding catch to help the Big Green escape the threat.
The Big Red went right back to work in the fifth inning, getting on the board with Hager's homer. There was little doubt about whether or not the ball would clear the fence as it rode a gusting breeze over the high fence in left-center.
Lee then led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to left-center that one-hopped to the wall after narrowly falling between the convening outfielders. After the first out of the frame, Lee came around to score on a triple to left-center by
Tom D'Alessandro, tying the score at 2. Dartmouth starter Michael Johnson worked through the rest of the inning before leaving with a no-decision.
Cornell then stromed ahead with a two-run seventh. Junior
Brenton Peters drew a leadoff walked, then scored easily on senior
Marshall Yanzick's double into the gap in right-center. Yanzick advanced to third on a groundout, then scored on Lee's single — marking his second game this season with three hits.
Meanwhile, Marks settled down to work deep into the game after Dartmouth plated a pair in the third. From there, no Big Green baserunner advanced past first base until after Marks was relieved in the eighth inning with a runner on first. Freshman
Kellen Urbon was summoned from the bullpen to make his team-leading 10th appearance, and a single and walk loaded the bases. Urbon then struck out Dartmouth's Chris O'Dowd swinging, then got a groundout to first to get out of the jam. Marks' final line was 7.1 innings pitched, allowing five hits, two earned runs and four walks while fanning three. Twenty-seven of his first 31 pitches were strikes.
The Big Red's final insurance run came in the eighth, when D'Alessandro scored a Peters sacrifice fly to left-center. Urbon then set Dartmouth (4-13, 1-3 Ivy) down in order in the ninth for his fourth save.
Cornell returns to non-league play for a 3 p.m. Wednesday doubleheader at Canisius. The Big Red then makes its lone interdivision Ivy trip over the weekend with doubleheaders Saturday at Brown and Sunday at Yale.
