Women's Cross Country Nabs Season-Opening Win vs. Army, Binghamton

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Senior co-captain Katie Kellner picked up right where she ended last season, placing first for the Big Red's No. 30 cross country team in Friday's season opener, same as she did for every meet in 2011.

Kellner led most of the race took took first overall against Army and Binghamton on the Black Knight's home turf, finishing the 5K course in 17:02.50 to best teammate junior Devin McMahon by five and a half seconds. The meet was held on the always challenging West Point golf course, and the race was underway in very warm and muggy conditions.

Junior Rachel Sorna took third for the Big Red, scoring points for her squad for the first time in her career while freshman Caroline Kellner was Cornell's fourth finisher and fifth overall. Genna Hartung was the final scorer for the Big Red, racing well over the final part of the course and placing sixth overall and fifth on the team.

Junior Emily Shearer was seventh overall in 17:32.4 as the Big Red had less than a 30-second spread between its first six runners.  Sophomore Marianne Collard rounded out the top seven with an eighth-place run of 17:52.3, and senior Kate Rosettie had one of the best races of her collegiate cross country career with a ninth-place finish in 17:57.4.

Also running well for the Big Red and placing in the top 20 was freshman Dina Iacone (11th, 18:09.8), sophomore Bori Tozser (13th, 18:21.7), freshman Maggi Szpak (14th, 18:23.2), freshman Claire DeVoe (15th, 18:26.4), freshman Ann Herman (16th, 18:27.0), sophomore Sydney Williams (17th, 18:28.9), freshman Kristen Niedrach (18th, 18:30.9), junior Liz Simpson (19th, 18:32.2) and senior Cara Costich (20th, 18:35.4).

The Big Red men and women will compete again next week, racing at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational on Saturday. The men will race an 8K at 11:00 a.m. at Gennesee Valley Park, and the women will race 6K at noon.
