Men's Hockey Can't Battle Back in 6-3 Loss at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The men's hockey team surrendered three goals on a Clarkson major power play and couldn't catch up to the Golden Knights on Saturday night in a 6-3 loss at Cheel Arena. Sophomore defenseman Joakim Ryan scored one goal, assisted on the second and played a pivotal role in the Big Red's third and final tally.

Junior goalie Andy Iles was pressed into action extremely early, shouldering away an offering from Jarrett Burton about 20 seconds into the game. But the Big Red struck first on Ryan's first goal of the campaign. Junior forward Dustin Mowrey chipped the puck into the path of sophomore linemate John McCarron, who then slowed the play down by stopping along the left half wall. That hesitation allowed Ryan to sneak into the play on the far side and, after receiving a perfect cross-ice pass from McCarron, fire a puck past Clarkson goalie Greg Lewis. It was Ryan's 12th point of the season, but his first in the goal ledger after he set a program record last season for most goals by a freshman defenseman.

Cornell (8-11-2, 4-8-2 ECAC Hockey) maintained great pressure thereafter, peppering the Clarkson (6-13-7, 5-6-3 ECAC Hockey) cage on its lone power-play opportunity of the frame. At the end of the man advantage, the visitors held a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.

But for the second consecutive night, the Big Red was assessed a five-minute major and suffered significant consequences. On Friday night, St. Lawrence scored the winner on a major power play late in the third period. On Saturday night, Clarkson scored twice in a 64-second span to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

A nightmare scenario then played out for Cornell when the Golden Knights' T.J. Moor scored on a breakaway while drawing a slashing penalty at the 1:12 mark. Under recent rule changes, the penalty still goes on the board, meaning the Big Red faced a two-goal deficit and a two-man disadvantage of 1:56.

A perfect 4-for-4 in two-man disadvantages entering the game, the Big Red continued that trend with a great kill from Ryan, D'Agostino and Erik Axell before a Clarkson penalty wiped out the final 1:13 of the five-on-three.

Cornell would draw back to within one on its own two-man advantage later in the period. After the first shift on the opportunity went a wry, head coach Mike Schafer used a timeout to regroup his squad and set up a play that worked to perfection.

Even though he didn't draw an assist on the play, senior forward Greg Miller played a key role in the tally. Brian Ferlin worked the puck up to Ryan at the top of the left circle. He then slid a pass across the ice with senior Greg Miller faking a one-timer and letting the puck slide all the way across to D'Agostino. With Clarkson's defense committed to the possibility of Miller's shot down the slot, D'Agostino blasted a shot past Lewis' left arm at 7:40.

Clarkson regained its two-goal lead a short time later on James Howden's rebound goal. The Big Red then answered to keep its deficit at one goal heading into the third period. With exactly one minute left in the second, Ferlin scored his second goal of the weekend and fifth of the season. Ryan created the play by winning a puck battle at the left point in the offensive zone, chipping the puck down the wall to Mowrey to create an odd-man situation. Mowrey found Miller in the circle, then the senior centerman feathered a pass across to Ferlin for a one-timer past Lewis' catching glove.

The Golden Knights then pulled ahead for good with two more goals in the third period to hand the Big Red its first five-game losing streak since 1999.

Cornell returns home for its next game action when league-leading Quinnipiac visits Lynah Rink on Friday, Feb. 8, followed by a matchup with Ivy League opponent Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 9.
