NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore
Joel Lowry scored his 11th goal of the season, and junior goalie
Andy Iles made 27 saves, but the Cornell men's hockey team's five-game unbeaten streak came to a close Saturday night with a 2-1 loss at #14/15 Yale.
The loss, coupled with Brown's win and Princeton's dramatic extra-attacker goal in overtime at Harvard, leaves Cornell (12-14-3, 8-11-3 ECAC Hockey) in ninth place in the final league standings. The Big Red will play a best-of-three series in the first round at Princeton starting Friday, March 8.
Yale (16-10-3, 12-9-1 ECACH) stormed out of the gates in front of a sell-out crowd on Senior Night, firing 10 shots on goal in just the first four minutes. The Bulldogs scored the first goal at the 6:22 mark on a perfect give-and-go on a two-on-one.
But Cornell answered just 80 seconds later on Lowry's strike. Senior forward
Greg Miller started the play in his own zone, attacking up the left wing with speed and getting a shot on goal that Yale goalie Jeff Malcolm could only kick back out in front. Lowry crashed the net and shoveled a shot by Malcolm's blocker to knot the score at 1 and give Miller his 94th career point. While it was the Big Red's last of three shots on goal in the period, the visitors were able to survive Yale's early push and get some traction.
That carried over into the next frame, which was a solid road period for the Big Red – even if there were no goals to show for it. Iles was only called upon to make five saves, most from distance or an angle, while Cornell put the heat on Malcolm at the other end.
Just after the midway mark, Lowry got off a shot that Malcolm stopped, then a mad scramble ensued with Miller jamming away from the top of the crease for a few seconds. About a minute later,
John McCarron's high shot produced another juicy rebound that
Armand de Swardt narrowly misses converting from close range. Then, with about four minutes left before the intermission,
Christian Hilbrich made a move on the rush that caused three Yale defenders to collide, but his pass to slot for an oncoming
Vince Mihalek was tipped just wide of the far post.
Cornell hit the post three times in the third period, but couldn't find the net again. The only two power plays of the game belonged to Yale, with the first one proving to be the difference-maker. Stu Wilson scored the winning goal on a rebound 2:07 into the third period.
