ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team will continues its lengthy stretch of non-league home matches at 10 a.m. Saturday, when it hosts West Virginia at Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell (5-6) split a pair of matches last weekend, dominating NJIT to the tune of a 7-0 sweep — including a trio of 6-0 doubles matches — before narrowly missing out on an upset with a 4-3 loss to 48th-ranked Boston College on Sunday. Sophomore
Lizzie Stewart extended her winning streak to three matches in singles and doubles (where she's paired with classmate
Priyanka Shah). Freshman
Michelle Wang improved to 3-0 in singles, and freshman
Mariko Iinuma won her collegiate dual singles debut on Saturday against the Highlanders.
West Virginia (5-3) is coming off a 6-1 victory over James Madison on Sunday. Habiba Shaker is 7-0 from the No. 2 singles position, and Paula Goetz (No. 3) and Carolina Lewis (No. 4) each have 5-3 records from their respective positions. Shaker and Hailey Barrett are 7-1 in No. 1 doubles. This will be the Mountaineers' only match against an Ivy League program this season.
The Big Red and Mountaineers have played just three dual matches in their program histories, with Cornell taking a 2-1 lead in the series thanks to a 4-3 victory March 7, 2015. Current senior
Jane Stewart clinched the victory in straight sets at No. 6 singles. West Virginia winning last defeated the Big Red, 4-3, on Feb. 10, 1995. Cornell's first victory against the Mountaineers was on March 8, 2014. Cornell and West Virginia also crossed paths at the Akron Invitational last fall, with the Big Red winning five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches in the blind dual format.
In his sixth season as the Carl H. Meinig Head Coach of Women's Tennis,
Mike Stevens has amassed 53 victories with the Big Red heading into the West Virginia. A victory against the Mountaineers would give Stevens soul possession of the program record for coaching victories with the Big Red.
