(PDF) PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- The Big Red tied its best start in program history and allowed its fewest goals of the season, beating Ivy League foe Brown, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The win keeps Cornell unbeaten at 7-0, tying the mark set by the 1987 squad.
Senior
Olivia Mattyasovszky continued to prove her offensive prowess, scoring three times to mark her fourth multi-goal game of the season. Junior
Kristy Gilbert added two, as the Big Red got goals from seven different scorers. Cornell has had at least five different goal-scorers in each of its seven games so far this season.
The Big Red (7-0, 3-0 Ivy League) dominated in every statistical category, outshooting the Bears 33-10 and 25-6 in shots on goal. Cornell controlled 11 of the 14 draws, picked up 19 ground balls to Brown's nine and caused seven turnovers. Sophomore
Joey Coffy led with a career-high six draw controls.
On the Bears' first possession of the game, senior defender
Catie Smith caused a turnover almost immediately after Brown had completed the clear. Classmate Mattyasovszky then gave the Big Red a 1-0 lead on the ensuing possession, putting away a high shot on a feed from
Emily Tripodi, extending Mattyasovszky's goal streak to four straight games and Tripodi's point streak to six games.
Tripodi got one of her own just 21 seconds later, receiving a pass from Gilbert and curving her shot around a defender.
The Bears (4-4, 0-3) answered quickly though, with Rose Mangiarotti getting Brown on the board less than a minute later.
After the Bears failed to clear, giving the ball back to the Big Red, Gilbert pushed the lead back to two with a rocket from distance with 22:07 to go in the half, extending her five-game goal streak.
Brown had an opportunity to cut the deficit back to one moments later after being awarded a free-position attempt, but junior goaltender
Renee Poullott was there to turn the shot away. The Big Red then capitalized on its own free-position, with Gilbert getting her second of the day and her team-leading fifth free-position goal of the season.
The Cornell defense stifled the Bears for the remainder of the half, with Poullott denying just the fourth shot on goal for Brown with about five minutes to go.
The Big Red broke a scoreless bout of about 15 minutes with two goals in 15 seconds to take a 6-1 lead with three minutes to go. Mattyasovszky buried her second of the day before sophomore
Joey Coffy took advantage of a free-position opportunity for her sixth goal of the season.
Cornell worked Brown goalkeeper Victoria Holland in the first half, putting 12 shots on goal and forcing Holland to make six saves.
Senior
Jessica Schwab got the second-half scoring started just 43 seconds in, receiving a feed in front of the net, turning and shooting as she was falling to give Cornell the 7-1 advantage. Mattyasovszky completed her hat trick with a free-position blast just 1:13 later.
Schwab nearly made it nine when Holland was caught out of her crease with about 24 minutes to go, but Schwab's shot sailed wide.
Senior defender
Catherine Moubayed caused a big turnover moments later and took off in transition, giving the ball back to the Cornell offense and causing the Brown defense to scramble and commit a yellow-card foul, giving the Big Red a man-advantage with 20:34 to go. Freshman
Hannah O'Reilly came in and immediately popped in a free-position man-up goal, going five-hold on Holland for the 9-1 lead.
The Bears got on the board once again with 16:12 to go with Hafsa Moinuddin finding the back of the net.
Sophomore
Taylor Reed got Cornell into double-digits with 5:31 to go. Reed caught a pass in front before turning and shooting for her ninth of the season and sixth straight game with a goal.
The Big Red continues its stint away from Schoellkopf Field taking the short trip to Binghamton on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. start against the Bearcats.
