#7/8 Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Rutgers For 12-9 Win

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The women's lacrosse team used a scoring run of four goals in the second half to pull away from a pesky Rutgers squad for an 12-9 win on Saturday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium. The win was the sixth straight for Cornell and also gave the Big Red a 6-0 start on the road this season, which ties a program record for the best start to a season away from Schoellkopf Field.

Cornell (7-1, 3-0 Ivy) won the draw control battle 12-10 but Rutgers (7-5, 1-1 B10) held the edge in shots (34-27) and ground balls (18-14).

Senior Amie Dickson opened the scoring 6:31 into the first half, taking a feed from sophomore Tomasina Leska and putting the shot past Bianca Dente. Rutgers pulled the score back even two minutes after Dickson's tally, but the Big Red then scored three straight to hold a 4-1 lead just past the midway point of the opening stanza. Sophomore Sarah Phillips started the scoring run when senior Catherine Ellis fed her for a finish and then junior Ida Farinholt converted a free-position exactly two minutes later to make it 3-1. It was Ellis that found Taylor Reed for the 4-1 lead, as the senior dished off a pass that the junior was able to finish just 20 seconds after Farinholt's tally.

Just as they had responded to Cornell's first goal, the Scarlet Knights responded in kind again, netting three unanswered goals to even the game up at 4-4 with 2:37 to play in the first half. But Ellis – already with two assists in the game – scored with 1:20 left on the clock to give the Big Red a 5-4 edge heading into the break. With the score, Ellis also became the 15th player in program history to hit the 100 career goal mark.

Another goal from Dickson just over four minutes into the second half gave Cornell another two goal lead but yet again, Rutgers did not walk away quietly. Not only did the Scarlet Knights answer Dickson's goal but they also answered a free-position conversion from Leska with two-straight scores to make it 7-7 with 18:03 to play.

The Scarlet Knights controlled the ensuing draw but turned the ball over on the possession and senior Catie Smith scooped up the ground ball to start the transition the other way where Dickson potted her third of the day. The Big Red then scored two more goals to within 1:39 – with Phillips and Ellis both finding the net – to push the lead back out to 10-7 with just over 15 minutes to play. Farinholt then assisted on Phillips' third goal of the afternoon for the 11-7 lead.

The Big Red Red had to withstand another push from the Scarlet Knights and senior Kristy Gilbert tacked on one goal with six seconds to play to hold off the hosts and escape with the 12-9 win.

Dickson and Phillips each finished with three goals while Reed, Leska, and Farinholt each added one. Ellis led the Big Red with three helpers while senior Kristy Gilbert had two and Leska and Farinholt had one. Smith finished with a team-high four ground balls. Dickson added three draw controls.

Renee Poullott made 13 between the pipes for the Big Red. It was the third-straight game that the senior made at least 10 saves for the Big Red.

Cornell returns to Schoellkopf Field on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. matchup with Binghamton.
