ITHACA, N.Y. — The University of Albany's Dakotah Savitcheff scored with two goals in the final 20 seconds of the game to lift the Great Danes past the women's lacrosse team, 11-10, on Tuesday night at Schoellkopf Field.
Savitcheff scored a game-tying goal with 18 seconds left on the clock and then potted the game-winner just eight seconds later to sink the Big Red. Kenzie Neal won the draw and lofted the ball over the top of the Cornell defense for Savitcheff, who then went the remaining 20 yards down the field and fired the ball past
Renee Poullott to steal the game for the Great Danes.
The Great Danes got on the board 90 seconds into the first half but
Tomasina Leska's dodge and fire in front of the net tied it at 1-1 just over a minute later. Savitcheff's first of the day gave Albany the lead again but goals from junior
Ida Farinholt and senior
Amie Dickson gave Cornell its first lead of the game at 3-2, 10 minutes into the game.
The teams continued to score in spurts, with Albany taking a 4-3 lead in the span of 55 seconds before three Cornell goals – scored in succession by junior
Taylor Reed, Farinholt and Dickson –in just 2:11 made it 6-4.That two goal lead would be the largest one that either team would have in the game.
The game saw 10 different leads and the stat lines were similar throughout. Cornell (9-2, 4-0 Ivy) had the 13-10 edge in draw controls, Albany (8-4) had the 24-23 edge in shots and each team picked up 10 ground balls.
Albany closed out the opening stanza with three unanswered goals of its own – all from the stick of Neal – to enter the break with a 7-6 lead.
Three minutes into the second half, Reed found the net twice in 31 seconds to once again give the Big Red a lead, 8-7. Neither team scored for the next 10 minutes and 35 seconds – the longest non-scoring stretch of the game – until two goals from Savitcheff gave Albany a 9-8 lead.
Farinholt's third tally of the game evened the score with eight minutes to play. Then, with 3:12 remaining, sophomore
Sarah Phillips hopped into the play from behind the net, coming around the left post to take a slick feed from Dickson and fire it into the top left corner of the net for a 10-9 lead.
Savitcheff, though, gave Albany its sixth lead of the game with 10 seconds left to seal the upset.
Reed (3g, 0a) Farinholt (3g, 0a) and Dickson (2g, 1a) each finished with three points while Leska (1g, 1a) and Phillips (1g, 1a) each had two and senior tri-captain
