Dickson Scores Five, Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – The women's lacrosse team held off a feisty Dartmouth squad for a 14-12 win on Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. Senior Amie Dickson finished with a career-high five goals and added an assist for six points while tri-captain Catherine Ellis added three goals and and sophomore Sarah Phillips had one goal and four assists.

The win moves Cornell to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in Ivy League action while Dartmouth drops to 5-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The Big Red jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the game after junior Joey Coffy caused a turnover and Cornell took the ball down the field where Dickson converted a free-position. Consecutive goals from Ellis and Phillips staked the Big Red out to a 3-0 lead 6:27 in. Dartmouth clawed back, potting two goals to pull within one before Ellis' second pushed the Cornell's lead back out to two.

After Dartmouth again pulled within a goal, Phillips worked the ball from behind the net in front to Dickson for a finish and a 5-3 score line with 12 minutes played.

The Big Green controlled the ensuing draw and then scored five-straight goals.

Right after gaining an 8-5 lead, Dartmouth controlled the draw but Coffy again caused a turnover, shutting down the Big Green's midfielder and picking up the ground ball to start the clearance the other way. On the other end of the field, Coffy found Dickson and the senior fed sophomore Tomasina Leska in between closing defenders.Leska fired it home to pull Cornell within two.

It would be a strong individual effort from Leska that made it 8-7 and ignited the Cornell offense to score three goals over 18 seconds in the final minute of the first half.

First, Leska circled around behind the net and came around the left post before jumping and firing a shot past Kiera Vrindten. Nine seconds later, Dickson fired a low shot just inside the eight-meter fan to tie the game, 8-8, before junior Ida Farinholt nailed a free-position shot to give Cornell a 9-8 lead.

Scoring runs remained the theme of the game in the second half, as Dartmouth opened up with three-straight to take the lead back, 11-9, before Cornell scored three-straight to take a one goal lead at 12-11.

Dartmouth evened the score up again but after an initial shot from junior Taylor Reed bounced behind the net, Phillips scooped it up and immediately found Dickson in front for a quick finish and the lead. It was also Phillips that fed Ellis just over two minutes later to make it a two-goal game. With less than nine minutes to play, senior Renee Poullott deflected a free-position shot to keep the lead at two and the Big Red defense stood strong.

Poullott finished with seven saves for Cornell while Vrindten had 14. Coffy finished with three caused turnovers and four ground balls while senior tri-captain Catie Smith added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Cornell outshot Dartmouth (37-26) while the Big Green held the edge in ground balls (15-18) and draw controls (11-17).

Cornell will make the short trip to #11 Syracuse on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup and final non-conference game of the regular season.
