ITHACA, N.Y. — In its final regular season game on Schoellkopf Field, the women's lacrosse senior class combined to score 10 of Cornell's goals and
Renee Poullott tied a career-high with 15 saves in a 13-6 win over Harvard on Saturday afternoon. The win gave the program its second-ever Ivy League Regular Season Championship and just like its last title in 2006, the clinching win came over Harvard.
The victory gives Cornell no worse than a share of the Ancient Eight title at 6-1, improving to 11-4 overall with the victory. The Big Red will host next weekend's Ivy League Tournament if Penn wins its game against Yale tomorrow.
Senior tri-captain
Catherine Ellis led the Big Red with six points on five goals and one assist while fellow senior tri-captain
Kristy Gilbert netted four free-position goals –setting a single-game record – and had one assist for five points. Senior
Amie Dickson added one goal and three assists. Junior
Ida Farinholt and sophomores
Sarah Phillips and
Tomasina Leska each added a goal while Phillips also picked up two assists.
The Big Red's senior class didn't just make an impact offensively, as Poullott had her second-consecutive 15-save performance and tri-captain
Catie Smith had five caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Cornell ended the game with a 29-26 edge in shots, a 12-9 advantage on the draw and a 15-14 lead in ground balls.
Ellis opened the scoring 1:41 into the first half only to have Harvard tie it up less than a minute later, but highlight-reel goal from Ellis gave the Big Red a lead it would not relinquish.
After Leska dished off a pass to Gilbert 15 yards out from goal, a senior-to-senior pass set up Ellis with the ball in the middle of the eight-meter arc and her back to the net. With a defender pressuring her from behind, Ellis whipped a shot behind her back and into the net.
Scores from Gilbert, Phillips and Farinholt pushed the lead out for Cornell before Ellis' finished off her hat trick to make it a 6-1 edge over Harvard just 9:02 into the game.
After combining for seven goals in the first 10 minutes, the teams then scored two more apiece over the final 20 to send Cornell into the break up, 8-3.
Dickson earned a free-position attempt for Cornell 2:40 into the second half and the senior dished it off to Leska coming in from the left for a high-finish. Gilbert then converted two-straight free-position goals to set the program record and give Cornell an 11-3 lead with 18:17 remaining before Harvard took advantage of a penalty to score an up-goal.
After more than eight minutes in which neither team found the net, Ellis slotted a pass to Dickson, who just outside the crease, to finish off the third senior-to-senior goal of the game. Then with 4:17 remaining – and for the third time in the game – Ellis responded to a Crimson goal to make it 13-5.
Harvard's final tally with 1:12 to play was the lone goal of the contest that the Big Red didn't respond to with one of its own but at that point, Cornell had earned a comfortable lead for the final score of 13-6.
Olivia Gundrum made 10 saves for the Crimson while playing 51:28 and Marisa Romeo, the second-leading scorer in the Ivy League, was held to just one goal. Harvard - a team Cornell could face next weekend - falls to 8-7 and 4-3 in conference play.
Cornell will now await the results of the other Ancient Eight contests to find out both its opponent in the semifinal round of the 2017 Ivy League Tournament and if it will host.
