#4 Women's Ice Hockey Travels to Face #6 Princeton, Quinnipiac

ITHACA, N.Y. - The #4 Cornell women's ice hockey team will close out 2019 on the road. The Big Red will play #6 Princeton, Friday, and Quinnipiac, Saturday, in hopes to improve to 11-1-1.

About the Big Red

  • After a split weekend at #6 Ohio State, Cornell was ranked fourth in both the USCHO.com poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The Big Red is 9-1-1 on the season with a 5-0-1 record in ECAC Hockey. Cornell has earned wins against Quinnipiac, #6 Princeton, St. Lawrence, Yale and Brown in ECAC Hockey and the team tied #6 Clarkson. Outside of the conference, the Big Red beat #8 Robert Morris twice, Syracuse and #6 Ohio State. The one loss came on November 29 at #6 Ohio State.
  • 11 games into her senior year, defender Jaime Bourbonnais leads the team with 18 points on two goals and 16 assists. She has earned a point in all but one game (at St. Lawrence), including three games with three assists. She currently has a six-game point streak.
  • Junior forward Maddie Mills follows with 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. Mills has had four multi-point games.
  • Senior forward Amy Curlew follows in third place with 13 points on eight goals and five assists. Curlew earned her first career hat trick against Brown (Nov. 16) to close out a five-goal weekend. She is on a five-game point streak.
  • Lindsay Browning became the first goalie in program history to open the season with three shutouts when the team beat Quinnipiac, 1-0. In just 11 games, Browning has 231 saves for a .967 save percentage. The junior goalie has let just eight shots past her and into the net for a .75 goals against average.

Last Week in Review

  • On Tuesday, Nov. 26, the Big Red visited Syracuse for a game against the Orange. Junior Finley Frechette opened the game with a goal in the sixth minute. Syracuse tied the score shortly after but O'Neill gained the lead for Cornell with a late-second period goal. Bourbonnais and senior Paige Lewis added a tally each for the 4-1 win over the Orange.
  • The Big Red followed its win with a split weekend. After falling 3-1 at Ohio State on Friday, Cornell came back to beat the Buckeyes, 5-1, on Saturday. Six different players earned two points against Ohio State: Jaime Bourbonnais, Amy Curlew, Paige Lewis, Maddie Mills, Kristin O'Neill and Maddie Mills.

  • Junior Finley Frechette scored her first goal on the season to open the game against Syracuse on November 26.
 

About Princeton

  • Princeton is ranked #6 by both the USCHO.com and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine.
  • The Tigers are 9-2 on the season with a conference record of 7-2. Princeton is 1-1 against ranked teams with a loss against #3 Cornell and a win against #5 Clarkson (Nov. 22). In conference, the Tigers have beaten Quinnipiac, Colgate, Dartmouth, Union, RPI, #5 Clarkson, St. Lawrence with losses against #3 Cornell and Harvard.
  • Senior forward Carly Bullock leads the team with 18 points on 10 goals and eight assists. She has had six multi-point games and is currently going on four straight games with points.
  • Sophomore forward Sarah Fillier follows closely with 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists. Fillier has had five multi-point games, including in which she notched three or more points.
  • Senior goalie Stephanie Neatby has spent 338:09 in goal with 126 saves and 11 goals against for one shutout against Syracuse on Oct. 26, while junior goalie Rachel McQuigge spent 260:00 in goal for 89 saves and six goals against.
 

The Series vs Princeton

  • The series between Cornell and Princeton has been alive since the 1974-74 season with the Tigers holding a 47-45-6 all-time advantage.
  • During the 2018-19 season, Cornell was not able to overcome Princeton. As the visitor, the Big Red tied the Tigers, 2-2 in November before hosting Princeton for a 5-0 loss in January.
  • Earlier this year, the Big Red defeated #6 Princeton, 3-1, at home on November 2.
 

About Quinnipiac

  • The Bobcats are 8-6-3 with a conference record of 2-5-2. Before starting ECAC Hockey play on Oct. 29, Quinnipiac played three two-game series against Providence (Oct. 4-5), Maine (Oct. 11-12) and Sacred Heart (Oct. 25-26). The Bobcats went 2-1-1 against Providence and Maine before winning both games against Sacred Heart with shutouts (6-0 on Oct. 25 and 5-0 on Oct. 26). Within ECAC Hockey, Quinnipiac defeated Rensselaer and St. Lawrence, tied against #5 Clarkson and Dartmouth, and fallen to #5 Princeton, #3 Cornell, Colgate, Harvard, and Union.
  • Lexie Adzija leads the team with 16 points on seven goals and nine assists. With three multi-point games, the sophomore forward had her six-game point streak snatched against Yale.
  • Senior forward Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout follows with 11 points on eight goals and three assists. Most recently she notched one goal and one assist against Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 29) and one goal against Yale (Nov. 30).
  • Senior goalie Abbie Ives leads the goaltenders with 324 saves for a .931 save percentage in 855:24. Sophomore goalie Logan Angers follows with 45 saves in 178:08.
 

The Series vs Quinnipiac

  • The Big Red first played against Quinnipiac during the 2003-04 season and, since then, Cornell has maintained a 17-9-7 series lead.
  • In both games of the 2018-19 season, the Big Red beat the Bobcats. For the first game, Cornell won, 2-1, as the visitor in November before hosting Quinnipiac for another 2-1 win in January.
  • Earlier this year, the Big Red defeated Quinnipiac, 1-0, at home on November 1.
 

Two Peas in a Pod

  • Micah Zandee-Hart and Kristin O'Neill will be serving as the team's captains for the second year.
  • Zandee-Hart led the 2018-19 squad with 55 blocks, while also finishing third with 17 assists and sixth with 21 points.
  • O'Neill led last year's team with 22 goals while finishing second in points (38) and tying for first in power-play goals (7).
 

Border Battle

  • Out of the 28 players on the roster, 19 are from the United States while nine call Canada home. 
  • The Americans have representatives from Minnesota (5), California (2), New York (2), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (1), Pennsylvania (1), Virginia (1) and Connecticut (1).
  • The Canadians on the roster come from five different provinces: Ontario (5), New Brunswick (1), Saskatchewan (1), British Columbia (1) and Newfoundland and Labrador (1).
 

About Head Coach Doug Derraugh

  • Now entering his 15th season directing the Cornell women's ice hockey program in 2019-20, Doug Derraugh has brought the Big Red women to their place among the nation's elite.
  • Derraugh has a 267-150-42 record in his first 14 seasons as the head coach of the Big Red, with his 200th coming in the form of a 4-2 win against Yale in 2016.
  • Cornell has made the ECAC Hockey Tournament each of the last 12 seasons, won the tournament four of the last 10 years and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in seven of those seasons.
  • The 2019 American Hockey Coaches Association National Coach of the Year guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-to-back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Cornell returned to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2019 after finishing as National Quarter Finalists in 2013, 2014 and 2017.
  • He led the team to five consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history in 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14.
 

About Associate Head Coach Edith Racine

  • Edith Racine enters her first season as the associate head coach after serving as an assistant coach for 10 years prior. 
  • Under her direction, the Big Red has seen vast improvement among its goaltenders. During her time at Lynah, Racine has most notably coached Amanda Mazzota, Lauren Slebodnick, Paula Voorheis and Marlene Boissonnault.
  • During her first season with the Big Red, Racine coached Mazzota to finish as the national leader in shutouts (11) in the 2009-10 season, breaking the Cornell single season record for both men's and women's ice hockey. Mazzota was also the national leader for goals against average (1.11) after the close of the 2010-11 season, as well as the runner-up in save percentage. 
  • Slebodnick finished her career with the top spot in Cornell history for career wins (68) and sixth-best goals against average in the nation during the 2012-13 season.
  • Voorheis was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team in 2013-14. She finished her career after the 2016-17 campaign ranked second all-time in save percentage (.925) and saves (2,238) and third in goals against average (2.14). 
  • Most recently, Racine has coached Marlene Boissonnault to national success. Boissonnault finished her senior season (2018-19) ranked second in the nation, and first in the ECAC, in goals against average (1.64). Boissonnault was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week six times in her career (2x in 2018-19 and 4x in 2017-18). She finished the second-winningest goalie in program history with 56 wins.

  • Cornell will come back to campus on January 4-5 for two games against non-conference opponent, Mercyhurst. The Big Red will play at 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday at Lynah Rink.
