ITHACA, N.Y. – Fresh off a pair of victories in its first matches of the season, the women's tennis team is back in action on Saturday against St. John's at Reis Tennis Center before hitting the road Sunday for a match at Buffalo.
Sophomore
Ryann Young and freshman
Gabby Sullivan pulled out straight-set victories in both of their singles matches last weekend for Cornell at the Nos. 3 and 5 spots, respectively, and freshman
Sara Perelman won both of her No. 6 singles matches in three sets. But the Big Red was particularly dominant in doubles in the home victories against Maryland-Baltimore County (6-1) and Temple (5-2), sweeping all six matches across the weekend. The freshman tandem of
Rosemary Li and Perelman have won all 16 of their games at No. 3 doubles.
First up for Cornell (2-0) will be a veteran-laden St. John's (0-3) squad that fell to Boston University and Dartmouth in its matches last weekend. The unranked Red Storm split its singles matches with the 57th-ranked Big Green, but was defeated in all three doubles tilts. Junior Nevena Selakovic won both of her both matches at No. 1, as did No. 2 Joanna Zwirbulis — one of three returning seniors to the squad's lineup. The Big Red and Red Storm did not cross paths in fall tournament play. The all-time spring series is split at one match apiece — St. John's won 7-2 on March 22, 1990 in a match on Hilton Head Island, S.C., then Cornell won 7-0 on Feb. 6, 2011.
The Big Red will then hit the road for the first time in team play, heading northwest to take on the University at Buffalo at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Bulls are 0-3, having won just two points in their opening matches against Syracuse, No. 43 Brown and Boston University. The all-time series is even at 2-2, with Cornell winning in 1992 and 2007, and Buffalo winning in 2009 and 2010.
Buffalo's roster features plenty of youth, with two juniors, four sophomores and one freshman. Sophomore Tanvi Shah has started the season as the Bulls' No. 1 singles player. She defeated the Big Red's
Gabby Sullivan and
Sarah O'Neil, but lost to
Christine Ordway in September's Cornell Fall Invitational. Junior Tarama Markovic, who has been appearing at the No. 3 spot, won the C Flight of the same event with wins over three Cornell competitors along the way. In all, the Bulls were 6-3 in singles matches and 0-3 in doubles matches against the Big Red in the fall.
