ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell women's lacrosse eclipsed the 20-goal mark for the first time in nearly two decades, Jessi Steinberg scored five goals and Cornell rolled to a 21-7 victory over visiting Canisius at Schoellkopf Field on Tuesday evening.

The No. 16 Big Red (5-0) remains undefeated on the season thanks to a total team effort that saw 11 different players score a goal and all three Cornell goalies earn saves on shots by the Golden Griffins (2-4).

The Big Red got out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to goals by Katie Kirk, Jessi Steinberg and Olivia Knotts in the first 2:07 of the contest. Canisius got one back, but Cornell followed the Griffins' first goal with five straight.

By the time the Big Red's 5-0 run was complete, Steinberg had a hat trick and Lauren Halpern, Caroline Salisbury and Lindsay Toppe had their names on the scoresheet. In the process, the Big Red chased Griffins starting goaltender Kayla Scully and forced Gina Molfetta to take over. Molfetta didn't fare much better, as Cornell took a six-goal lead into halftime at 11-5 and only increased the margin from there.

The Big Red was able to get playing time for multiple players in the game's final 30 minutes, and though the game switched to a running clock with 24:52 to go, the Big Red managed six more goals after that point.

Freshman Skylar Fidel earned her first career goal and sophomore Chelsea Rowe scored her first two goals of the season. When the final whistle sounded, Steinberg had earned five goals and Salisbury had her second hat trick of the year.

Steinberg's five goals was the most scored by a Cornell player since Libby Johnson's seven on March 2 of last season. Cornell's 21 goals was the most it scored since the team got 22 on May 1, 1994 against Rutgers, a full four seasons before coach Jenny Graap took over.

Also having multi-point days for Cornell were Knotts (two goals, one assist), Shannon Tierney (two goals), Toppe (two goals, one assist) and Halpern (two goals).

Senior Kyla Dambach got her first start in goal since the game against Harvard on March 3. She was excellent, making four saves in her 35 minutes of work. Once the clock started running, junior Courtney Gallagher made her third straight appearance in net and saved four shots in just 17 minutes. Freshman Carly Gniewek closed out the game with one save in 7:34 of playing time.

Cornell has now won six games dating back to last season and is 1-0 lifetime against Canisius. Cornell moves to 3-0 in out-of-conference games this season.

Cornell hops on a plane now and travels to Orlando for a Saturday contest against nationally ranked Notre Dame. The Big Red stays in the Sunshine State for another game at Jacksonville on March 20.
