Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The men's hockey team peppered the Harvard goal with 40 shots on goal Saturday, then junior goalie Andy Iles made three standout saves late in the third period to preserve a 2-2 tie at Bright Center. Seniors Greg Miller and Nick D'Agostino scored the goals for Cornell (9-13-3, 5-10-3 ECAC Hockey).

Similar to in Friday's 4-2 win over Dartmouth, Cornell had a strong start to Saturday's game. But unlike Friday, the Big Red was able to break through and score an early goal – this one coming courtesy of Miller at the 2:03 mark.

The play started with sophomore Brian Ferlin narrowly missing on an opportunity from the slot. A Harvard defenseman tracked down the puck behind the net and rimmed it around to the left point. But Cornell sophomore defenseman Jacob MacDonald was there to intercept. He then took a shot through traffic that Miller was able to deflect past Crimson goalie Raphael Girard to stake the Big Red to an early lead. The goal was Miller's team-leading 10th of the season.

Iles made the save of the period at the 14:20 mark, flashing out his right pad to kick away a Colin Blackwell one-timer from the slot. Harvard generated two more quality chances in transition a short time later, but one shot was sent wide and another was blocked.

Both teams generated very little on their respective opening power plays, but Harvard's second opportunity on the man advantage turned out to be more fruitful. Luke Greiner intercepted a pass toward the left corner and started toward goal. His shot to the short side was wide, but caromed off the side of the cage right back into his path. The ensuing scramble left Alex Fallstrom free to pop in a rebound in the slow slot to give Harvard the equalizer with just 25.2 seconds left in the period.

Just like in the first, the Big Red started off the second vigorously. Junior forward Dustin Mowrey hit the post 40 seconds in, then frehsman forward Christian Hilbrich was stopped from point-blank range in the slot at 1:56 after Ferlin's forecheck-and-feed off the turnover.

But it was the Crimson that took the lead 8:07 into the second period when a Big Red defenseman lost an edge on a controled breakout, leading to a two-on-one the other way. Kyle Criscuolo fed Marshall Everson for the easy converstion to give the hosts their first lead of the night.

D'Agostino then brought Cornell back even with his fourth goal of the season at 16:28. Miller won a faceoff to Girard's left, then sophomore forward Joel Lowry kept possession with strong play along the wall before cycling to Ferlin behind the net. He moved the puck out the weak side to D'Agostino creeping into the left circle, and – with Miller creating traffic in front – the tri-captain's shot slid underneath Girard.

The Big Red pushed hard for a go-ahead strike in the waning moments of the stanza, but Miller's chance off the scramble went wide and senior forward John Esposito's shot off a clean Mowrey faceoff win was gloved by Girard.

Cornell then largely dominated play for the remaining 25 minutes, outshooting Harvard in the third period, 19-8. But it still needed Iles to come up huge to save at least one point for the effort. Harvard's Danny Biega was stopped on a three-on-two rush with 2:43 left in the third, Criscuolo was thwarted after beating a defender one-on-one 16 seconds later, then Iles made perfect the best save of all with 21.8 seconds remaining on Greiner's offering on another three-on-two rush.

The Big Red returns to Ithaca, N.Y. for its final regular-season home games of the season next weekend. Cornell will play host to Rensselaer at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 before holding its annual Senior Night at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 against defending ECAC Hockey champion Union.
