HENLEY-ON-THAMES, Eng. – The Cornell men's rowing program has sent four boats to compete at the 178th edition of the Henley Royal Regatta, held June 28 to July 2 in Henley-on-Thames, England. The Big Red will have three crews competing in the Temple Challenge Cup and one crew in the Visitors' Challenge Cup. The defending IRA national championship lightweight varsity eight will compete as the Cornell A boat, while the heavyweight program has sent a developmental eight filled with rising sophomores and juniors to row under the name Cornell B. A developmental lightweight crew (Cornell C), consisting of mostly rising sophomores and juniors, qualified for the Temple Challenge on Friday evening by finishing ninth out of 52 boats. Cornell will also have a heavyweight coxless four competing in the Visitors' Challenge Cup beginning on Thursday vs. Boston University.
The Temple Challenge Cup gets underway on Wednesday and the lightweights will open the racing against Exeter University in the second race following the Lunch Interval at 2:05 p.m. (9:05 a.m. EST). The heavyweights will race the University of Gronningen (Netherlands) at 3:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. EST), while the lightweight developmental boat will take on A.S.R. Nereus (Netherlands) in the first race following the Tea Interval at 5:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. EST).
Founded in 1839, Henley Royal Regatta is famous both as a great sporting occasion and as a social event; people come from all over the world to attend, either as competitors or as spectators. Winning an event at Henley has always been considered one of the greatest achievements of a rower's career, even amongst those who have become world champions; and a rowing life is not complete if it does not include competing at Henley.
Unlike all other major international regattas, racing at Henley is on a knock-out basis, with crews rowing two abreast over a course which is one mile 550 yards (2,112 meters) long.
