WINDSOR, Conn. — The men's squash team scratched out four memorable victories, but Navy won the other five matches in the minimum three games to win the College Squash Association's 15th-place match on Sunday's final day of Hoehn Cup play.
Cornell (6-15) entered the Hoehn Cup — which is the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship for teams ranked ninth through 16th in the country — ranked 15th, while Navy (17-10) was 16th going into Sunday's match at Loomis Chaffee School.
The Big Red took a 2-1 lead after the first rotation on the strength of five-game victories from sophomore
James Paolella at No. 9 and freshman Illia Presman at No. 3. Presman rallied from an 11-3 loss in the first game to win in extra points in the second game, then 11-8 in the fifth.
Navy tied it up at 3 with Cornell's lone point in the second wave coming from senior
Jordan Brail at No. 2 – playing his last collegiate dual match. While the Mids wrapped up the win with three-game victories at Nos. 4 and 7, junior
Perry Hanson took a memorable match at No. 1. He won a marathon first game by an incredible score of 24-22, then marched through the next two games to win in three. He was the Big Red's only competitor to go a perfect 3-0 on the weekend.
Team competition for the Big Red is now complete, but the squad will have a presence at the CSA's Individual Championships next weekend.
