NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Cornell sailing team took 15th overall at the 2019 Sperry Women's National Championship on Friday evening at Sail Newport at Fort Adams State Park. Junior
Gabby Rizika earned All-America honors as a skipper, becoming the fourth All-American in school history.
Gusts topping out in the 30 kt range made the racing incredibly physically demanding. The B Division entry placed 10th overall, with
Daisy Holthus (races 1-4) and
Sebby Turner (races 5-18) as skipper and
Kimberly Wong (races 1-2),
Adeline Sutton (races 3-6),
Miranda Sannino (races 7-10) and
Halle Buescher (races 11-18) taking turns making an impact as crew. The Big Red won race two of the weekend and earn three other top three efforts and eight total top 10 finishes.
A Division was sailed by
Gabby Rizika (races 1-6, 9-12) and
Brooke Shachoy (races 7-8, 13-18) as skippers and
Diana Otis (races 1-8),
Becca Jordan (races 9-10, 13-18) and Shachoy (races 11-12) as crew. Cornell was hampered by a breakdown and a disqualification in consecutive races on day two, but placed as high as second and posted five top 10 race efforts over the two days of finals.
The Big Red will be back in Newport on Tuesday, May 28 when the Big Red competes in the Gill Coed Western Semifinals.
