ITHACA, N.Y. —
Jillian Saulnier,
Laura Fortino and
Greg Miller scored shootout goals to complete the White team's come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Red at the annual hockey Red/White Game at Lynah Rink.
For the second straight year, the intrasquad game featured three periods. With both the men's and women's teams alternating pairs of shifts, it enabled teams to stay fresher than in the past. Power plays were awarded evenly at set times throughout the game. Any infractions that were detected by the officials resulted in penalty shots, which produced one goal on four attempts.
White scored first on a goal by
Hayleigh Cudmore, who cashed in a rebound of a
Taylor Woods shot that was redirected into the low slot. Red answered with the equalizer 1:17 before the first intermission on a
Kirill Gotovets strike off a rare four-on-one break.
Christian Hilbrich sent
Teemu Tiitinen into the zone, and Tiitinen zipped a pass from the bottom of the right circle for Gotovets to tip in from the top of the crease.
Emily Fulton then gave Red its first lead of the game on a penalty shot early in the second period, beating
Katelyn Pippy with a move to her forehand before sliding the puck over the line along the ice. Pippy exacted her revenge later in the period, getting her blocker to another Fulton penalty shot to keep the score 2-1.
White got even with 2:51 left in the second on a two-on-two break.
Taylor Woods started the play in the defensive zone, sending
Jillian Saulnier up the right wing in the neutral zone. Her pass to the middle was steered in by
Victoria Pittens.
White struck 2:42 into the third on a perfect shot by
Nick D'Agostino from the top of the left circle.
Armand de Swardt set up the play, and
Joel Lowry drew the second assist on the breakout pass.
Cole Bardreau then scored for Red to even the game at 3. He wheeled a long-range slapper from the left point at the 9:03 mark, with assists going to
Braden Birch and
John Esposito. Esposito then scored an empty-net goal for Red with 30.4 seconds remaining.
John McCarron picked up the assist, making the score 4-3 heading into the shootout.
Pippy made saves on all three Red women's shootout attempts to allow White to pull ahead, 5-4, then Miller's backhand move clinched the victory.
Vince Mihalek then slapped a rocket over
Omar Kanji's glove to cap the scoring.
